Dell officially quits smartphone business

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: December 16, 2012

Dell has recently announced that it's leaving the smartphone business for now and will shift their focus and attention in making competitive Windows tablets instead. Dell's head of consumer business, Jeff Clarke, recently confirmed at the Dell World conference that it is quitting the smartphone business, saying that "It needs a lot of investments to really be successful." As Clarke sees it, "It’s a content play with Android. Amazon is selling books and Google is making it up with search. So far we couldn’t find a way to build a business on Android." But even after throwing in the towel,…

Technology Entrepreneurship Class in UP

Relevance: 95%      Posted on: February 28, 2008

Just came back from an hour long talk at the UP College of Engineering in Diliman for an elective class on Technology Entrepreneurship. I find the class very interesting. The lecturer shared with me how he came up with the idea after attending MIT and thought it would be great to have the same in the state university. If I were still in college, I would have taken up this elective in a heart beat. First, it exposes the students to the basics of entrepreneurship especially that the class is offered to engineering and computer science students. A scientific mind…

I need a kick-ass business card.

Relevance: 95%      Posted on: August 26, 2006

In the last 2 meetings that I went to, I realized I already ran out of business cards. The 200 pieces I got 18 months ago are all gone. Now I need a new one, actually two, One for the business and another specific to my blogging profession. I need them before I leave for Taiwan in September. Any suggestions for a good shop to print them? I think 250 for each card design would be enough. If you know someplace around Makati who does them well and fast, please point me to the right direction.

Relevance: 93%      Posted on: May 11, 2007

Was looking for DVI/HDMI cables and adaptors last night and I thought CDR King might have them. They didn't have them but I was surprised with the newer stock of gadget accessories they have -- iPod replacement batteries. And they're pretty cheap too -- prices starts at Php350 for the iPod Shuffle to Php400 for the newer generation iPod Videos. I also checked their website and they got it on display. The prices are so low they're almost as cheap as the other cellphone batteries along the sidewalks and half as much as generic batteries for my Canon dSLR. Now,…

National Book Store to get into eBook business?

Relevance: 91%      Posted on: January 3, 2011

Got this from a reliable source that National Book Store (NBS) is planning to get into the ebook business. I was a little surprised at first but considering that NBS is the biggest book retailer in the country, going into the eBook business this early makes good business sense. Aside from distributing thousands of book titles, NBS also publishes a few titles themselves. They also got an online store thats been running for years. It's too early to tell how the eBooks will be distributed but it could either be implemented via an online store or via on-site transfer (within…

Are Internet Cafes still a Good Business?

Relevance: 88%      Posted on: March 27, 2008

Been receiving a couple of emails lately (mostly from OFWs but there's one from a Chinese/Taiwanese company) asking if there's still some good business to be made with internet cafes in the Philippines. From accounts of friends and people who've been into the net cafe business as well as what we're seeing in every mall and street alley, there's some mixed reaction. Five years ago, the prospects were better; way better. I myself was thinking of opening up one back then. My excitement was immediately doused after doing the math. Just like any other brick and mortar businesses, there are…
