Smart is set to publicly announce their new HSPA+ capable Plug-It and calls it Smart Bro Rocket with promised speeds of up to 12Mbps on their mobile network. The Smart Bro Rocket uses a Huawei E353 HSPA+ USB dongle. The new dongle is available for prepaid users with a retail price of Php3,995 (will be available by Friday next week). The same Smart Bro loading system works and the same rates apply (Php10 per 30 minutes). Smart currently has 154 base stations capable of delivering HSPA+ speeds so it's still limited to Metro Manila and key provincial cities like Cebu…

Relevance: 82%      Posted on: October 10, 2011

Since October 1, Smart has switched the plug on their Smart Bro Rocket Plug-It to use volume-based data pricing (same as Always On). The recommended bucket plan is Php200 per 180MB. So I tried it on my Rocket Plug-It to see how much I'd consume in a day. So I subscribed to the Php200 per 180MB pricing yesterday evening at 6:04PM and watched my data consumption via the My.Smart website. Here's how it looked like yesterday: 6:04PM: 184MB 7:30PM: 155MB This morning, my PLDT myDSL at home wasn't working so I turned back to the Smart Bro Rocket as my…

Relevance: 80%      Posted on: October 7, 2011

I have been told by a reliable source that the Huawei E586 could be the pocket WiFi used by Smart for the Rocket WiFi Plus. The press release says it's going to ride on their HSPA+ network so this looks like it. We borrowed this unlocked Huawei E586 from an independent seller to check if it's going to be the one that will be offered when the Smart Rocket WiFi Plus finally arrives. Huawei E586 HSPA+ Pocket WiFi: HSPA+/HSPA/UMTS 21.1Mbps downlink, 5.76Mbps uplink WiFi 802.11 b/g/n Li-Ion battery 1500mAh 32GB storage via microSD card I've only been testing it since…

We caught the scoop a few days ago and it's now confirmed. Smart has finally unveiled its newest mobile internet device -- the Smart Bro Rocket WiFi Plus -- which claims speeds of up to 20Mbps. The SmartBro Rocket WiFi Plus is an upgrade to their Pocket WiFi which used to be only up to 5Mbps and in conjunction to the previously released Rocket WiFi dongle. Smart Bro Rocket Buyers Guide

Relevance: 71%      Posted on: August 8, 2011

So I bought the Smart Bro Rocket at Smart's Wireless Center in Rockwell this morning. They made me sign a waiver that outlines some of the limitations of the dongle and the service. So, here are 10 things you need to know before buying the Smart Bro Rocket. Some Wireless Centers are still a bit confused with the Smart Bro Rocket so you will have to ask and explain that it's the new one with 12Mbps. The guard and front customer service both didn't knew about it but I insisted and the other one in the activation desk confirmed. 1.)…

Smart Bro Rocket cuts UnliSurf Plans

Relevance: 68%      Posted on: September 16, 2011

Just learned today (thru one of my staff in Manila and verified by @arnoldgamboa) that Smart Bro Rocket has finally cut off subscription to Smart Unlisurf plans. When Smart Bro Rocket was first released, they allowed subscription to UnliSurf 50 and UnliSurf 200. However, they warned that this will eventually be reverted to a bucket plan by September 30 -- at Php180 per 200MB. The default internet rate is Php15 per 30 minutes. It's still the 16th of September but subscribing to UnliSurf has suddenly become invalid. Will get official word from Smart regarding this switch and will update once…

Smart Bro bumps Plug-It speeds to 5Mbps

Relevance: 65%      Posted on: September 20, 2011

Looks like Smart Bro has upgraded the bandwidth allocation of their Plug-It broadband sticks and now offers up to 5Mbps. I've been hearing about the upgrades for some time now but since the Smart website did not reflect the changes, we had to wait for the official release. The update has just been posted recently, showing this table. The Power Plug-It is now up to 5Mbps (postpaid). The Starter Plug-It is now up to 3.6Mbps (prepaid). Of course, actual speeds will vary with time of day and location. It's going to be pretty hard to validate this but if you…

Smart Communications is celebrating this Valentine’s Day by giving their loyal Smart Bro prepaid subscribers a treat; a significant price markdown on the Smart Bro Plug-it device which can now be had for only Php99. No strings attached. In retrospect, the Smart Bro Plug-it device was originally being retailed by the telco for Php3,995 some four years ago and the price dwindled down to Php995 back in 2013. Being part of a prepaid bundle, the Php99-worth Smart Bro Plug-it device doesn’t have any lock-in period and it comes with a free Smart Bro SIM card. Further information about the promo…
