Globe breaks silence, explains Fair Usage Policy

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: February 1, 2014

It seems Globe is the only one actively defending the telco's Fair Usage Policy. In a recent release they sent out via Twitter, they explained the FUP in a nice little infographic. Here's the entire picture of what the whole throttling and daily bandwidth allowance works. They've also pointed out that less than 3% of their subscribers do exceed the 1GB per day or the 3GB per month allocation. The controversy broke out last week when Globe started actively enforcing their Fair Usage Policy, sending out text messages to heavy users informing them of the measures implemented once they reach…

Fair Use Policy: Globe vs. Smart compared

Relevance: 88%      Posted on: January 25, 2014

The idea of a Fair Use Policy is nothing new and has been enforced, albeit discreetly, by telcos on a case to case basis. Both Smart and Globe have their own version of the Fair Usage Policy for their network services, be it SMS, calls and mobile internet. That means any or all of the "unlimited" SMS, calls or mobile internet offers that the telcos offer have a numerical limit. That means if you subscribe to unlimited SMS for 1 day and you send out 1,000 messages in 1 hour, you will be cut off by the telco. Same is…

Globe ramps up 1GB/day or 3GB/month Fair Usage Policy

Relevance: 85%      Posted on: January 24, 2014

Recently, Globe has been sending out reminders via SMS to some of their subscribers about the Fair Usage Policy that they are enforcing. A number of our readers have sent us reports about the daily bandwidth allocation and throttling regulation. The FUP basically provides an allowance of 1GB per day or 3GB per month, whichever comes first. Once the allocation is used up, subscribers will moved to their 2G network. That means you still get "unlimited" mobile internet but it will be slower. This FUP applies to all surfing promos and data plans for Globe postpaid and Tattoo Lifestyle Sticks.…

Smart caps Mobile Internet @ 1.5GB/month

Relevance: 53%      Posted on: December 23, 2010

This is the first time I was able to read Smart's Fair Use Policy on Mobile Internet Use and was surprised to see that their cap on unlimited mobile internet is just 1.5GB per month. A reader was asking for some clarifications about Smart's Samsung Galaxy Tab and the accompanying unlimited mobile internet. After a quick search on Smart's website, I discovered that they only allow up to 1.5GB of bandwidth per month. Once the cap is reached, they will throttle you down to a slower (yet unknown) speed. And here's the catch: The 1.5GB allocation of the Fair Use…

Switching to Smart, not minding the FUP and Data Cap

Relevance: 38%      Posted on: February 2, 2014

Last week, Globe has actively enforced their FUP and monthly data caps. Both my Globe postpaid accounts have been hit (despite not getting the SMS notifications, yeah sucks). In desperation, I urgently applied for a Smart postpaid line as an alternate account. I applied for the UnliData Plan 1500 and while I am already aware that it comes with a Fair Usage Policy of 1.5GB per month, I was assured by my friends using the same plan that they have not been capped for months now. So I signed the waiver that I would agree to the FUP stating a…

Update: Mobile 3G Usage Survey

Relevance: 38%      Posted on: August 28, 2008

When I first published results of my latest poll on mobile 3G usage, several readers requested that I extend it to get more samples. After a month and about 530 votes, I think we've got the sample size in the vicinity of 1 to 1.5%. See results of the poll below. Like the first results, the top mobile 3G services are still Smart Mobile 3G (using their 3G phone), Globe Mobile 3G per Minute and followed by Globe Visibility. uMobile 3G users seemed to have slowed down since CURE announced their offering in May this year (uMobile still uses the…

Does your company have a Blog Policy?

Relevance: 34%      Posted on: July 13, 2005

While only a small number of companies have actually implemented a Blog Policy, is your company have or is trying to create something similar? It may not be specifically a blog policy but something with a wider scope. I recently had a small incident with one company that I am working for right now. Though it has become my personal policy not to publish specific details of what I do or anything closely resembling the work that we do around here, I sometimes get the "slip-of-the-tongue" sort of way about some minute details. It happened last week when one of…

Results: Mobile 3G Usage

Relevance: 33%      Posted on: July 3, 2008

We've got over a hundred submissions from our recent poll on mobile 3G services. The results are not that surprising but the breakdown of services is a bit interesting though. See figures and graphs after the jump. Quite a number of users have already been using their new uMobile SIMs too (7.19%) while fledgling Sun Cellular 3G is still down there. Surprisingly, very few people are using PLDT WeRoam -- a service which has practically been supplanted by SmartBro Mobile 3G. 3G usage is split between Smart/PLDT and Globe Telecom two-to-one as shown in the table below. Sun Cellular may…

Been getting this text messages from Smart for week now. I usually automatically delete SMS alerts but this one is some kind of contest/promo for their Smart 3G service. Surf, chat and email all for P10 for 30mins. Sali na sa Internet Promo. Go 2 wap.smart.com.ph/internet or text INTERNET name/address/age to 4040. Registr for free. DTI 4575.
