BDO Online implements One-Time Password via SMS

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: May 1, 2013

Earlier this week, BDO implemented a two-factor authentication with their online banking service. Aside from the personal password, BDO is also sending a one-time password (OTP) which customers use to be able to login to the online banking service. This implementation is very similar to what GMail is offering with their 2-step verification process. BDO has only introduced it this week and all customers have the option to enable this in their account profile. This means that aside from your usual personal password, another password is sent to you within minutes of the initial login. The password automatically expires after…

Hacking incidents involving e-mails and social media accounts are becoming more frequent and one of the main reasons why it happens is because most people use weak passwords. If you're not sure if your password is strong enough then you might want to check this website. Author's note: As some of our readers have advised, be wary and avoid using your real password. You can use a dummy password or substitute some of the characters. And like the site itself says, "Be careful where you type your password." Thanks guys!, as its name suggests, is a web-based tool that…

Looks like Smart is testing a new service under their SmartBro brand which offers WiFi service to customers. Called the SmartBro WiFi, prepaid users get a Smart Tag with username and password to access WiFi hotspots for just Php10 per 40 minutes. After several blog posts and discussion over the recent Xoom Password Recovery Facility (see Easily Cracked Xoom Accounts?), Xoom has wisened up and fixed that feature. Marhgil posted about it here after checking back on their system. That was quite fast. At least they're monitoring blogs or reading emails huh?

Porn Sites: Forgot to renew your domain, eh?

Relevance: 70%      Posted on: October 30, 2006

There's this little known underground economy for domaineers that's very, very lucrative. In one of our discussions the other night at the SEO Philippines party, there's this one guy from down south who snatched up the .COM of a tri-media popular .COM.PH website -- within months, he was allegedly earning USD$6,000 per month from Adsense for domains. Lucky guy (if my guess was right, he used to link/comment to this blog). Ok, going back to the topic of porn sites snatching up expired domains. A classic example of which is my friends popular blog awards site -- the Philippine Blog…

Use GCash to buy Prepaid Load for Smart and Sun

Relevance: 65%      Posted on: September 11, 2013

During our trip to Berlin, Germany last week for IFA, I accidentally discovered that my GCash account had an option to buy load for other networks such as Sun or Smart. I totally forgot about it until today when I had to quickly reload my other Smart prepaid number. So I fired up the GCash app on my HTC One and could not find the feature. When I tried it on *143# and chose GCash, the option re-appeared. It was buried deep into the options under GCash but you definitely notice it included Smart and Sun. Here’s how it looks…

Smart Bro replaces Smart Wifi

Relevance: 61%      Posted on: April 26, 2006

Smart Communications thought their Smart Wifi brand is knee deep in the mud right now that the best thing to remedy the bad publicity is to re-name it. So, they came up with Smart Bro (is that a shortcut for broadband?) They did some clean-up and even remove pages from their official site which mentioned Smart Wifi. Too bad that page is already #1 on Google, Yahoo and MSN for the term "smart wifi". (I suppose my blog will take over that spot, eh?) Migs pointed out that that Smart Bro is also a browser and a few days after…

Several emails I received the other day pointed to with an expired landing page for Network Solutions. Someone must have forgotten to renew their domain. A quick WHOIS on the domain revealed some clues: Domain Name: ABS-CBNNEWS.COM Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC. It is possible nobody noticed this and when the expiration elapsed, it usually takes 5 to 7 days for the…
