The New iPad (or iPad 3) Review

Much has been said about the new iPad — stating with the “new” name, the same old design, the slightly beefed profile and the underwhelming specs. Only one thing remains and that’s the hyped up, beyond-HD display. Check out our full review of the new iPad after the break.

Wi-Tribe doubles Plan 1998 speed to 4Mbps

Wi-Tribe has recently (not sure exactly when) upgraded all the speed limtes of all of their broadband plans, including the top Plan 1998 from 2Mbps to 4Mbps. Not bad considering my PLDT DSL plan is charging the same rate but only pulls down 1Mbps (supposed to be 2Mbps or 3Mbps).

SmartBro 3G on its way to HSDPA 3.6Mbps?

With the purchase of PLDT/Smart of CURE, the company now has a wider band for its 3G network. With the largest spectrum of 15MHz, Smart already uses the 1920-1935MHz and the 2010-2025MHz band. The additional frequencies from CURE would practically double its capacity and pave the way for higher 3G speeds.

D-Link Load-Balancing Router: 2-in-1 DSL Router

Found this at the PC Express website:

“The DI-LB604 is the newest addition to our range of routers that includes the industry’s latest technology. It provides all the functionality needed to establish a reliable high-speed Internet link while at the same time protects past investments,” said Mr George Wong, Marketing Director of D-Link International Pte Ltd.

The Load-Balancing Router with features 2 WAN ports for load-balancing and a fast-acting fail-over mechanism for dropped Internet connections. 4 Ethernet ports provide wired connections to up to 4 computers. Thus, users can set up a high-performance network that offers the fastest and most reliable speeds, without sacrificing their past investments.

Advanced Network ProtectionWith SPI and NAT firewall with DOS attack protection, the DI-LB604 provides secure and reliable network connections. System logging, ACL and VPN pass-through protects the network against outside threats.

Easy Management and SetupThe DI-LB604 can be easily configured using its web-based management interface.

The DI-LB604 Link Load-Balancing Router will be available soon at all PC Express branches.

If from what I understand here is right, this means you can hook up two DSL accounts and combine them into one router and get an effective connection rate equivalent to the sum of both broadband connection.

So, I have an existing PLDT myDSL at 1.2Mbps and another Smart Bro account at 386Kbps. If I use the DLink DI-LB604 router, I could have 1.586Mbps connection speed on my network. If one is down, the other is still hooked up. Cool! I want one!

Smart 3G for real?!

Among the 4 telcos that were granted licenses to operate third-generation (3G) mobile networks, Smart looks like it’s on its way to serve up broadband speeds for mobile phones.

Of the lot Smart claims it got a perfect 30 from NTCs rating.

Among the companies that applied for a Third Generation (3G) license, SMART ranked highest, garnering a perfect score of 30 based on the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) 30-point grading system designed to gauge the capability of aspiring telco operators to massively and effectively provide 3G services.

As a result, Smart has been assigned the largest radio frequency allocation – 15 MHz compared to 10 MHz for the other operators. Moreover, it now has the choice of the best frequency spectrum. This will enable Smart to rapidly deploy its 3G network nationwide and also offer the highest quality 3G service to its subscribers.

“We have already ordered the network facilities needed to establish nationwide 3G coverage in the shortest possible time,” Smart President and CEO Napoleon Nazareno said. “We will repeat the rapid roll-out that we accomplished in deploying, first, our analog and then, our GSM network infrastructures. We are in 3G for real.”

Get ready to experience technology that allows for faster data transmission speeds from 114 Kbps up to 2 Mbps. Soon, Smart subscribers here and abroad will benefit from the convenience of high-speed data communications and mobile multimedia services such as video conferencing, audio streaming and mobile Internet.

I highlighted the 2Mbps transmission speed. Taking into account their track record with Smart Wifi, I am not so sure if they’ll do any better with the 3G offering.

P.S.

So far, only the following mobile handsets are 3G capable : Nokia 6630, Nokia 6680, Nokia N70, Nokia N90, Sony Ericsson Z800, and Sony Ericsson K600. I’m sure more will come.

PLDT Plan 999

Looks like PLDT is aggressively selling its DSL service, now with a residential package of Php999 per month (PLDT Plan 999) at speeds of 384Kbps. This is the former bandwidth allocation for their Plan 1995 which is now at 512Kbps.

On top that, their Php788 per month for Smart WiFi is being heavily promoted in the provinces.

The Plan 999 was also an old promo for students only but has now been expanded to cover regular residential subscribers. With the introduction of DSL Plan 999, I think PLDT will soon be upgrading existing subscribers to higher bandwidths. Much more that Globe Telecoms is pushing to 2Mbps for Php2,995 (Explore Gold Plan).

The problem here though is that PLDT is so aggressive in selling broadband connections to potential new customers that it has already forgotten about the existing ones. Just read the comments over at the Smart WiFi entry.

I am sure they know that it’s cheaper to retain new customers than to get new ones. Oh, I forgot they have that 1-year lock-up clause.

Smart WiFi launched

smart wifiLaunched just yesterday, Smart WiFi is a new broadband internet service which allows users to get connected wirelessly thru Smart’s cell sites. The only thing you need is an outdoor antenna to serve as transceiver on any of Smart’s hundreds of cell sites nationwide.

Maximum bandwidth is up to around 128kbps and promo price starts at Php788/month. It’s an easy and affordable alternative if you don’t have phone lines in the neighborhood. This is gonna be a big hit once they find a way to bring access down to handhelds and portable devices (read: Tungsten T5 & Life Drive).
