Cherry Mobile Magnum 2X Review

We know that this may be out-dated by all standards but we never really had the chance to do a full review of the dual-core smartphone from Cherry Mobile locally known as the Magnum 2X. Now that we have a review unit from the Philippine-based cellphone manufacturer, we thought to give it a fair airtime.

Is there hope for #betterinternet with Smart LTE?

Smart Comm. sent out a release to the media earlier last week announcing that they will be 100% LTE-ready by mid-2012. That’s certainly good news considering that we’re just actually talking about HSPA+ coverage in the past months.

Nokia E6 Review

Since the Nokia E71 came out several years ago, I’ve been a huge fan of the Finnish company’s full qwerty handsets. They’ve continued that same legacy and after 3 years, we still see the same signature with the E6. Read our full review of the Nokia E6 below.

Globe WiMax Internet is here!

Just got an SMS confirmation from Globe that they’ve already rolled out and servicing customers on their WiMax network. I’m still getting the details but the Inquirer ran the story last night that it will be 512Kbps at Php799 per month. This service will certainly be competing against Smart Bro’s Fixed Wireless offering.

Speak and Surf is Globe’s answer to Smart Bro?

While we were on the topic of broadband, I asked more about Globe’s Speak and Surf and found out some really juicy details about their new product. I believe this was also mentioned during our last meet-up when the Globe Team did their presentation.

  • Out of the box solution for broadband internet and landline telephone.
  • Use the wireless internet and the phone at the same time.
  • Connects to Globe cellsites using a wireless modem/router via CDMA technology.
  • Up to 256Kbps connection speed.
  • Costs Php995 per month including the phone line.
  • Free text messenging within the network (500 SMS per month unlimited for the first 3 months)

Globe Speak and Surf

I was told that this hasn’t been rolled out commercially but they’ve been doing rounds door-to-door. We should be seeing print ads and TV commercials by October. Hopefully, this would answer the growing complaints for a Smart Bro alternative.

Cost of Fixed Wireless Broadband dropped 90%

Around November 2003, I was living at Bacoor City, Cavite renting a nice penthouse on a 3-storey building one kilometer south of SM Bacoor. I liked it there — the food is cheap, quite subdivision, rent is super cheap (Php3.5k for a one bedroom penthouse inc. water and electricity) and lots of space I can host a party for around 50 people.

When I got an offshore job and had to work from home, the first thing that I really needed was broadband connection. PLDT DSL was just new then and the only part of the city that had coverage were the ones beside the Aguinaldo highway. If you’re 50 meters away from the national road, you’re out of luck.

Thus, I looked for other alternatives — cable internet, ISDN, satelite internet and fixed wireless. Nothing was available except wireless broadband and Meridian Telekoms was quick to hook me up for a trial run for 1 week. They went to my pad, positioned the antenna and looked for a steady signal from their nearest tower which is in the Alabang Town Center.

Alas, the signal was enough to get some stable connection. But the pricePhp8,888 per month (VAT inclusive) plus a Php10,000 deposit for the antenna with a lock-in period of 2 years. I reckoned, that’s more than twice what I pay for my rent, ah! So I decided I’d rather move back to the metro, get some decent broadband and use the funds to pay for a nice condo or apartment. And until today, I’m still here in the same place I moved into 2.5 years ago.

Ok, we’re done with the tangent….

When Smart bought into Meridian Telecoms and offered Smart Wifi last year, it only costs Php988 (or Php788 promo). At my meeting last Monday with Smart, I was amazed to learn that that same fixed wireless broadband I almost signed up years ago is the same Smart Wifi being offered right now. The price dropped a staggering 90% — yes, ten-folds. At least, they made it as cheap as the dial-up. But so much for the connectivity and support problems which, btw, seemed to have degraded 10 folds as well.

Finger-pointing over the Chitika fiasco

Been reading a handful of blogs pointing fingers to almost everyone about the recent Chitika fiasco (via shoemoney).

Frankly, there’s no one to be blame here but those who got so fanatical with it head on, even to the point of leaving AdSense over Chitika (only to be disappointed later on). Ahh yes, big brother blogger have been raving about it and hence, the bandwagon effect (isn’t blogging about bandwagons?). So blame them for pointing you to the wrong direction?

From my end, I did sign up for Chitika when I first heard about it. I tried using it to augment the current AdSense placements, not completely replace it. I didn’t use much of it here and replace my AdSense ads with it. In fact, I just use it as an alternate ad to AS. It could get you higher cost-per-click but there’s always the math involve (country coverage, traffic, etc) – which was the main issue of it all.

You read the TOS, and however small the fine print which says auditing is done a month after to remove invalid clicks from non-US traffic, you agreed to it. You logged-in to your acocunt and you saw the hodge-podge layout/design, how lacking the features were, how inefficient and slow the auditing was yet you continue to use it. You posted your un-audited earning in your blog hoping to wow others and maybe even get them under your referral ID.

So who’s to blame now? That’s what you get when you count your eggs before they even hatch. As Marc quipped, “If it’s too good to be true, it ain’t”.
