Globe Telecom has finally confirmed that all iPhone 5 postpaid subscribers will get access to their LTE network at no additional charge. This means that if you are currently on a MySuperSurf data plan, you can get LTE for free.

One of my biggest problems when going on vacation in one of the smaller islands in Palawan is lack of internet connectivity. The one we’re staying right now (Coral Bay, Coron) doesn’t even have electricity 24/7 and we’re only able to charge our gadgets in the evening (6pm to 6am).

During the media launch of Globe’s Tonino Lamborghini Tattoo launch last week, I sat down with Peter Bithos (Head of Consumer Division) to talk more about the telco’s roll-out and their 10Mbps mobile internet offering.
In a press conference earlier today, Globe demonstrated their upgraded mobile internet service using the HSPA+ network which promises to offer an average 4Mbps to 6Mbps to mobile handsets (saw it burst up to 16.4Mbps).

A recent draft memorandum by the NTC indicates some sort of service level agreement where ISPs are required to provide a minimum guaranteed speed on subscriptions as well as allow for daily bandwidth capping on subscribers.
So I looked at how Globe does their capping for unlimited mobile internet (SuperSurf) and found out that their Fair Use Policy has a somewhat similar strategy. Though this time, it’s 800MB per day.
There was a time when mobile Internet was considered a luxury service. It was only limited to corporate executives who needs mobile Internet to access Outlook emails and SharePoint files. Globe’s Visibility and Smart WeRoam were still uber expensive and you’re locked with a contract. Prepaid 3G or even EDGE connection is non-existent.
Globe Telecom and NEC have been testing LTE (Long Term Evolution) in the Philippines as early as May this year and based on successful field results, it could be the telecom’s next upgrade path to provide better and faster mobile broadband services.
Just realized that since all the telecom players (Sun, Smart and Globe) are now offering unlimited 3G internet and subsequently lowering the prices down, 3G is officially cheaper than DSL.
There will always be claims of product/service superiority among competing companies and the one between Smart and Globe is a classic example. The latest one is the battle between mobile broadband services Globe Tattoo and Smart Bro.
Even today, I still hear a lot of people saying or commenting hat 3G internet in the Philippines is still expensive. Yeah, it’s not that very cheap but I don’t think it’s expensive either.
