Silicon Valley in the Philippines?

There’s this three-year itch about the idea of having our own version of the Silicon Valley in the Philippines. Migs started the discussion just over 2 years ago and has been revived by Marie of Pinoy Web StartUp.

Blog hopping, alive and unscathed!

I’m back, sort of. Blog hopping, replying to emails and catching up on a lot of readings. I dozed off right after I arrived home yesterday and after an almost 72 hours of grueling, un-amazing trip.

Wablet: How to NOT keep things in stealth mode.

A supposedly Philippine start-up company is secretly brewing a web IM service, much like Meebo. The IM is called Wablet and surprisingly got some attention from TechCrunch, though they obviously haven’t seen nor tried it yet.

Readers quickly filled them in providing clues from job sites and blogs of the in-house developers. Check out the sample Wablet IM on one of the Flash developer’s blog. His about page confirms it all:

Donald manages the entire division of Flash practitioners for a Philippine-based offshore outsourcing company… and primarily the lead Macromedia Flash Develoepr for FBM Software, a US based software development company with a development center in Manila, Philippines.

The company also posted some job ads for Web Developer and Linux Administrator back in late May at Jobvertise.

Pretty much similar to Friendster Mobs, only difference is that the latter uses Ajax while Wablet is implemented in Flash.

There goes the stealth mode. I suppose FBM Software doesn’t have any Company Blog Policy.

What happened to MyPhilippines.com?

Ok, first I used to work there as Design Executive back in 2001. A startup Philippine portal backed by the Ayalas, ImpactNET and DMCI Holdings, one cannot go wrong with it.

Dubbed as the next big portal after Yehey and PinoyCentral, MyPhilippines.com was using AltaVista’s proprietary search engine to crawl Philippine sites. It was also the sister company of PinoyExchange.com which is still alive and kicking but the stakeholders realized they have to part ways (and offices too). It has over 40+ employees when it started and trickled down to just 3 in it’s last months of operation.

Anyway, the company burned almosy half a million every month and only earned a measly Php50,000 in its 18 months of existence.

First off, the advertising model didn’t work back then. All banners and ads were just exchange deals. Then, they allowed kids straight from college to run a company and relied on gut feel. Good thing they had deep pockets or they wouldn’t have lasted a year.
