Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Review

When Samsung first unveiled the Galaxy Note, I had mixed feelings with the device. It’s got the genes of an impressive smartphone but a form factor that’s inching towards the tablet category. After having over a week’s time with the Samsung Galaxy Note and I’d like to share my verdict. Check out the full review after the break.

2008 Beijing Olympics and Other Links

I would have wanted to go to the 2008 Beijing Olympics next year but it looks like those much coveted tickets are very, very hard to get by so I’m scrapping that plan on my wish list for 2008 (that’s where all my Mabuhay Miles credits would have gone to).

Optimize Firefox with Firetune

Firetune for FirefoxMozilla Firefox seems to be bloated that it has become slower. Maybe it’s because of all those themes and plugins we all install. My Firefox have over a dozen active add-ons already and perhaps these 3rd party extensions are the ones making the browser a little buggy than ever.

However, I heard from the latest episode of Cranky Geeks that Firefox was built with the intention to be optimized for slow systems and even slower internet connection.

So, instead of tweaking the browser configs manually (by typing about:config in the address bar), here’s their recommendation:

Globe caps Visibility users to 5GB a month

The other day, we had a meeting with a Globe executive to finalize details of an upcoming project (that’s for another story though). During our meeting, I stirred our discussion to some juicy stories and they were candid enough to share some information (which I believe is bloggable since I wasn’t asked to sign an NDA *hehehe*).

I was told that new Globe Visibility users will be capped at 5GB of usage per month. The current monthly service fee for their mobile broadband solution (3G/HSDPA) is still at Php2,000 plus some activation fee. The cap is now included in the fine print but the existing subscribers will retain the eat-all-you can feature (unlimited).

How to erase that bad online reputation?

With the growing popularity of blogs, online reputation management has become a huge concern to companies and their PR agencies. While they can easily cover their tracks on traditional media, the internet is a whole new creature to deal with. Before, they only have to take good care of a few dozen press people and make sure all their products and services get good exposure. They can even seal an advertising deal with the publisher or the network and be confident that that bargaining chip (advertising cash) could help manage their reputation.

Cost of Fixed Wireless Broadband dropped 90%

Around November 2003, I was living at Bacoor City, Cavite renting a nice penthouse on a 3-storey building one kilometer south of SM Bacoor. I liked it there — the food is cheap, quite subdivision, rent is super cheap (Php3.5k for a one bedroom penthouse inc. water and electricity) and lots of space I can host a party for around 50 people.

When I got an offshore job and had to work from home, the first thing that I really needed was broadband connection. PLDT DSL was just new then and the only part of the city that had coverage were the ones beside the Aguinaldo highway. If you’re 50 meters away from the national road, you’re out of luck.

Thus, I looked for other alternatives — cable internet, ISDN, satelite internet and fixed wireless. Nothing was available except wireless broadband and Meridian Telekoms was quick to hook me up for a trial run for 1 week. They went to my pad, positioned the antenna and looked for a steady signal from their nearest tower which is in the Alabang Town Center.

Alas, the signal was enough to get some stable connection. But the pricePhp8,888 per month (VAT inclusive) plus a Php10,000 deposit for the antenna with a lock-in period of 2 years. I reckoned, that’s more than twice what I pay for my rent, ah! So I decided I’d rather move back to the metro, get some decent broadband and use the funds to pay for a nice condo or apartment. And until today, I’m still here in the same place I moved into 2.5 years ago.

Ok, we’re done with the tangent….

When Smart bought into Meridian Telecoms and offered Smart Wifi last year, it only costs Php988 (or Php788 promo). At my meeting last Monday with Smart, I was amazed to learn that that same fixed wireless broadband I almost signed up years ago is the same Smart Wifi being offered right now. The price dropped a staggering 90% — yes, ten-folds. At least, they made it as cheap as the dial-up. But so much for the connectivity and support problems which, btw, seemed to have degraded 10 folds as well.

Ok, let me go shopping at Amazon. :D

It becoming some sort of a trend now among blogs to put up contests such as these to promote blogs, increase reader participation and link baiting. So there’s the hint — want more traffic? Put up a contest.

Take for example the $1,000 Link Bait competition at BizNicheMedia.
