Posted on: April 1, 2014

In another surprise move by the Bureau of Internal Revenue, a request was sent to the NTC and ISPs to block several international websites for failure to remit proper taxes from operating within the Philippine internet domain. A copy of the letter was sent to the National Telecommunications Commission to demand ISPs to block access to certain social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter for failure to submit tax declarations from their operations in the Philippines. Facebook and Twitter are among the top destinations of Filipinos with the country being dubbed as the social media capital of the world. BIR…

41 blocks in 41 shots using a 41MP camera

Posted on: October 2, 2013

In order to showcase the Lumia 1020’s imaging prowess, Nokia signed New York-based filmmaker Paul Trillo to do a 52-second timelapse using only the smartphone’s famed 41MP camera. The result was unbelievably simple yet breathtaking short tour of the Big Apple from dawn to sunrise. But instead of just showing the pictures, Paul has added a bit of twist to his project. He used the Lumia 1020’s high-resolution captures and zoomed in on each of the 41 shots, creating a feel of being sucked in to the lights and architectures of New York city. If you want to go behind…

SMS turns 20 years today!

Posted on: December 3, 2012

The first time I got to try SMS was sometime in 1996 and I did not know the first time it was established was way back in 1984. At that time, it was still a test. It took about 8 years more before it became a standard and the very first commercial SMS was sent out in 1992. Engineer Neil Papworth sent the first SMS to an Orbitel 901 handset via Vodafone UK's network in 1992: "Merry Christmas. Here in the Philippines, Islacom first offered commercial GSM service in February 1994 while Smart was first established in 1991 by Orlando…

Facebook taps 7 anti-virus companies to boost security

Posted on: October 17, 2012

In its effort to improve security for its users, Facebook has announced its partnership with seven new anti-virus companies. "Our new anti-virus partners bring with them both the latest software and comprehensive intelligence. As with our existing partners, these seven companies will help protect Facebook's community of over a billion users by improving our URL blacklist system. This system scans trillions of clicks per per day, and before each click, the system consults the databases of all our AV Marketplace partners to make sure the website you are about to visit is safe. This means that whenever you click a…

Trillian out of Google’s Pack

Posted on: May 21, 2006

{via Google Blogoscoped} Trillian just left the house, or was kicked out. Google's all-in-one installation package, Google Pack no longer includes IM client Trillian. In January 6, 2005, when the "Pack" was formally announced, Trillian was among the dozen or so free software that is being heavily promoted by Google. The other day, the official blog of Trillian posted this message: Trillian is no longer included in Google Pack. Our goals are seemingly no longer perfectly aligned* with those of Google. Their reasons for removing Trillian are their own and were not made available to us. We harbor no ill-will…

Google has just added Google Pack and photo-oraganizing software Picasa into their Adsense Referral Program. Referrers get $2 for every successful install of Google Pack and $1 for Picasa. Your Google Adsense Control Panel will show the following products for referral. What is Picasa? Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organised by date with folder names you will recognise. You can drag and drop to arrange…

The $218 Trillion Phone Bill

Posted on: April 11, 2006

This must be the craziest "cellphone story" I've read for months: A Malaysian man said he nearly fainted when he received a U.S. $218 trillion phone bill and was ordered to pay up within 10 days or face prosecution, a newspaper reported Monday. Yahaya Wahab said he disconnected his late father's phone line in January after he died and settled the 84-ringgit (U.S. $23) bill, the New Straits Times reported. But Telekom Malaysia later sent him a 806,400,000,000,000.01-ringgit (U.S. $218 trillion) bill for recent telephone calls along with orders to settle within 10 days or face legal proceedings, the newspaper…

Google Talk, the next best IM?

Posted on: August 24, 2005

Rumors abound that Google is gunning for the Instant Messenger market, dubbed Google Talk. I won't be surprised if the rumors are true. Google's market share is so large that they can penetrate just about anything related (sometimes even remotely related) to the internet quite easily. The bigger question here is how IM users would welcome this new service? There are quite a lot of them already -- ICQ, AOL IM, Yahoo! Messenger and MSN. There are also 3rd-party clients (multi-protocol) which supports mulitple sessions of these IMs -- Jabber, Trillian, and Gaim are the more prominent ones. The very…
