Are you going to miss the Ovi brand?

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: May 18, 2011

So Nokia says it is completely dropping the Ovi brand and will go back to using the old Nokia nomenclature. As such Ovi will be re-labeled as Nokia Services. I was there in Singapore at the Nokia Connections back in 2007 when they first revealed the Ovi brand to encompass all internet-based services of Nokia. In a way, that was the beginning of the company's slow transformation from just a hardware manufacturer to an internet service company. OVI is a unification of Nokia's Internet services which covers music, games and maps, among others. A new user interface will be rolled…

Is the Android OS bigger than the brand?

Relevance: 99%      Posted on: May 25, 2011

For the last two years, I've bought over half a dozen smartphones running Android OS and realized they came from different handset brands -- Samsung, Sony-Ericsson, HTC and just recently LG (the Optimus 2X, my very first LG phone ever). One thing came to mind -- has Android grown so big it's now even bigger than the handset brand? What I mean is that consumers will start trusting and/or buying devices not primarily because of the brand but because it's running on Android. My personal experience might be an isolated case but I'd like to hear what others think. Is…

Poll: What brand of earphones are you?

Relevance: 90%      Posted on: August 18, 2011

I noticed a significane surge in the number of earphone brands being introduced in the Philippines this year. Which so many models to choose from, we're curious as to which brands still tops them all. Some two or three years ago, whenever people recommend a good set of earphones, it's the Senn brand that pops much more often. Even the knock-offs are getting some good following. So, let's go back to our question -- what brand of earphones are you? We've got the Sennheiser of course, the Philips, Sony, Monster/Beats, Jays, TDK, AKG, Shure, Audio Technika, Bose, Klipsch, etc. Go…

Does AMD have a brand perception problem?

Relevance: 90%      Posted on: September 23, 2010

While talking to one of the computer manufacturers recently, they shared that they have a hard time selling premium laptops when it's powered by an AMD processor. The issue might have to deal with market perception of the brand. When the topic was raised, a lot of my friends in the media thought it was due to the decade-long perception that AMD processors heat up so fast. Actually, that's not a problem any more (but the notion still persists up to now) but more like consumer tolerance on pricing. The bottom line -- it's very hard to sell the Phenom…

Why brand matters with laptops and not desktops?

Relevance: 88%      Posted on: June 30, 2012

I posted this question a couple of days ago on Twitter and got a barrage of really insightful responses. Why do brand names have a huge influence when picking a laptop but not a desktop? Many years ago, when I bought my very first laptop, I got a white label unit. It was affordable (30% less than equivalent branded units), had decent specs and passable design. Today, I no longer find those kinds of laptops in stores. In the case of my desktop PC, I bought might from parts and assembled them myself. No branded cases and no familiar logo…

Our last entry about Nokia being the top brand in the Philippines caused quite a stir, not only here but also in our FB and Google+ entry. So I thought why not do our own little survey too? At least this time you're able to get your votes across and have a say on the results. This time though, let's just focus our poll on the tech brands. So go hit the comments and give us three (3) tech brands you love the most. There's just so many we can't put them on a list. What I'll just do afterwards…
