Microsoft Windows 8 Beta Consumer Preview

So I’ve finally installed the Beta version of Windows 8 on our Sony Vaio P. This device has come a long way and has served us very well ever since we got it. This ultra-portable netbook originally came pre-installed with Windows Vista Starter, and then was upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate and now Windows 8 Beta.

Nokia Booklet 3G gets official

I didn’t expect Nokia to join the netbook bandwagon since they’ve been touting the N97 as a handheld personal computer. But it doesn’t hurt to have one more competitor in this segment so we’ll surely see the Nokia Booklet 3G soon enough.

Google, where’s our street maps?

I’m still waiting for my street level maps from Google. I know it’s hard to gather all that data for the entire world and resources might be scant. In the US, Microsoft is lugging it out with Google in taking street-level 3D pictures. Just look at their click-happy SUV armada prowling the streets and taking hi-res pictures for geo-mapping.

Google, Ask, Yahoo, MS and other Search News

Google just bought ImageAmerica, their 7th acquisition in the last 2 months alone, which includes Panoramio, Feedburner, geospatial photo-sharing service PeakStream, online presentation software Zenter, DoubleClick, communications security company Postini and VOIP phone aggregation portal Grand Central. ImageAmerica is in the high resolution aerial cameras industry — for higher-quality and better Google Maps, I suppose.

Visiting Groovenet Office

Was invited by GrooveNet President Greg Kittelson to visit their office and check out what they were doing with this new online community for Filipinos they’ve been cooking up. Jayvee tagged along since he already met Greg several times in the past.

GrooveNet is basically an online system much likes MySpace and Friendster but is developed by Filipinos specifically for the online Pinoy. They are also running an “Open Alpha” for the online 3D virtual world called THERE Philippines (licensed from THERE U.S.A.).

Jayvee has been telling me to download (57MB) a copy and try it but never got to install it on my laptop. I just had to create an account during the meet-up and played for a while with the guys teaching me some of the neat tricks around THERE.

Greg showed me the roadmap and even allowed me to a add few suggestions for improvement (they’re using Writely for documentation, project management and collaboration) to the functionalities.

I will need to play some more and get the hang of it before I can write a thorough review of the community.

For the meantime, if you want to try THERE Philippines, just sign up, download a copy here and start playing around. You will need some THERE bucks to buy and use items in the virtual world so leave me a note here and I’ll share with you some of the *bucks* I have.

P.S.
My avatar name there is yuga, obviously. :)

MeasureMap acquired by Google

Got an email from Jeff Veen announcing the acquisition of MeasureMap by Google:

As an early user of Measure Map, I want to share some important news with you.

Since its inception, my colleagues and I have seen tremendous potential for Measure Map to influence how people blog, and how they understand participation on the Web. We have always expected it to be big, and as such, our desire was to give Measure Map its start and then send it out into the world to grow and evolve into a strong, meaningful application.

Through the dedication of a fantastic team, along with your tremendous support in the form of feedback, feature requests, and overwhelmingly positive comments, have built a product that is fundamentally different from every other analytics application available today. We’re both grateful and proud.

So I said there was news, and here it is: I’m writing you to announce that Measure Map has been acquired by Google, effective today. For the near term, you will see no difference in its operations. In the not so distant future, you can expect great things from this acquisition. We couldn’t be happier to find such an ideal home for Measure Map, and are thrilled at the possibilities.

While this is a milestone for all of us at Adaptive Path, this sale does not affect how we operate, nor will it alter the structure of the Adaptive Path organization. Adaptive Path is still here, stronger than ever, and it will be for a long time to come. Above all, we remain committed to the principle that superior user experience inspires innovation and creates business advantage.

Thank you again for your input, your time, and your support of Measure Map. Should you have any questions or comments about any of this, please do not hesitate to contact me.

For more information, please see our post on the Google Blog:

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Veen and the Measure Map and Adaptive Path teams

Google already has Analytics but it’s too bulky and unweildy for a regular guy. MeasureMap is something more blogger-friendly and blog-relevant. I was just a bit disappointed with uptimes as it seems not able to take on the load even while on alpha.

With Google taking charge of MeasureMap, expect better scalability and more blogaholic features.
