Sulit.com.ph loses sulit.ph in landmark WIPO case

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: September 1, 2011

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has handed down the decision regarding the dispute between Sulit.com.ph and the owner of sulit.ph. I wrote about the domain dispute (UDRP) back in June where the owners of popular classified ads site Sulit.com.ph wants to take control of sulit.ph. A copy of the resolution was provided by Atty. Rod Vera (counsel to sulit.ph) which details the entire case. The resolution went down on a technicality, including one very critical point -- that the term "sulit" is a generic word and is also being used by a lot of other websites in their domains.…

Sulit is now OLX Philippines

Relevance: 92%      Posted on: March 19, 2014

Sulit.com.ph today has been completely folded into OLX Philippines. In a press briefing this morning, Sulit has been re-launched as OLX. Back in December, we reported that Sulit has merged operations with OLX Philippines. Little did we know that it will OLX that will become the brand handle for with the merger. This new direction was very recent as both Sulit and OLX are part of the same holding company, MIH. Both sites belong in the top 3 classified ads in the Philippines. Around middle of 2013, Sulit bought local car classifieds Pinoy Auto Trader. It eventually had to let…

Sulit files for UDRP to claim related domain

Relevance: 89%      Posted on: June 19, 2011

I thought this day would come when Sulit.com.ph would go after those who use the Sulit-related domains that run a competing service. I have just been told that the company has filed a UDRP with ICANN to claim the domain sulit.ph. The Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) was filed with ICANN, probably early last month, so that Sulit.com.ph may be able to take-over the domain Sulit.ph. In this case, Sulit.com.ph must establish a number of elements to succeed over the dispute: the domain name is identical or confusingly similar to a trademark or service mark in which the complainant…

Sulit merges operations with OLX in the Philippines

Relevance: 86%      Posted on: December 18, 2013

Sulit founder and Managing Director RJ David announced the other day the merger of Sulit.com.ph and OLX Philippines. Both sites are among the top 3 classified ads sites in the Philippines. The development was announced by RJ David in the Sulit forums. Here's a copy of the said announcement: Hello everyone. This is RJ and Arianne - founders of Sulit.com.ph. We are excited to announce that Sulit and OLX are combining forces in the Philippines and strengthening our #1 position as the fastest and easiest way for Filipinos to buy and sell stuff. Effective immediately, OLX.com.ph is being redirected to…

Why Sulit bought Pinoy Auto Trader?

Relevance: 79%      Posted on: July 4, 2013

In a joint press conference yesterday, Sulit formally announced that it has acquired start-up company, Pinoy Auto Trader. The acquisition looks more like an acqui-hire considering that the new site is barely a year old in operation. For a couple of years now, Sulit has been fiercely marketing their site in tri-media and tightly focused on several key verticals like "real estate" and "cars" (thus, a restructure of the site to create cars.sulit.com.ph as a landing portal). It would look like Pinoy Auto Trader (PAT) was actually trying to get into the automotive market where Sulit already has a strong…

Sulit.com.ph Sold for Undisclosed Sum

Relevance: 77%      Posted on: July 2, 2009

Leading classified ads site Sulit.com.ph has reportedly been sold to a foreign company for an undisclosed sum with negotiations going on as early as first quarter of this year. I've been hearing about several  negotiations for months now but held off writing about it until the transaction has been confirmed and completed. Details of the acquisition is yet unknown at the moment and it looks like the foreign owners/investors still want to keep it a secret. Sulit is one of the most visited websites in the Philippines with an estimated 46.3 million pageviews and 7.3 million visitors a month and…

How the mighty Sulit became OLX PH

Relevance: 73%      Posted on: March 25, 2014

It is no secret how Sulit became the Philippine's internet superstar since its inception in 2006. That's why it's a huge surprise how a giant could just suddenly give up all its brand equity to become the lesser-known OLX Philippines. Before Sulit, there was Buy&Sell Philippines, the company behind the free classified ads magazine. It was husband and wife RJ David that proved the internet is a level playing field, starting Sulit from scratch and a meager budget of Php2,400. The growth of Sulit was the envy of the owners of the Buy&Sell magazine that they tried, in vain, to…

Sulit.com.ph redirected to Sedo

Relevance: 72%      Posted on: November 7, 2008

Earlier today, a friend texted me asking what happened to Sulit.com.ph, the free classified ads site and forum. The site appears to have expired and has been put on sale at Sedo. I did a quick whois query on the domain registration and some more background checks which led me to believe it was a malicious and successful attempt to take over the domain. The domain is still registered up to July 26, 2010 so this is not a case where the owner just forgot to renew a recently expired domain. Besides, an expired domain will show a generic dotPH…

AyosDito to close as OLX consolidates

Relevance: 40%      Posted on: November 17, 2014

A surprise announcement between classifieds competitors Naspers, Singapore Press Holdings, Schibsted Media Group and Telenor are joining forces to create one single classifieds ads network. Operations in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand and the Philippines will be affected by these changes. In the Philippines, OLX is owned by Naspers while competing site AyosDito is owned by Singapore Press Holdings. The two biggest sites have been competing fiercely for years to dominate the market, both running billboards, bus ads, and even TV commercials just to get bigger share of the market (OLX has about 60% market share). The merger will put AyosDito's operations…

Pinoy Auto Trader founders launch AutoDeal.com.ph

Relevance: 29%      Posted on: June 4, 2014

Two months after Sulit.com.ph, which is now OLX Philippines, has pulled the plug on Pinoy Auto Trader, the talented team behind the site has regrouped to form their second automotive-centric website called AutoDeal.com.ph If you guys can remember, Pinoy Auto Trader was acquired by Sulit back in July last year. But just six months in to the merger, Sulit decided to shut down the site for an undisclosed reason. Although it was a tough pill to swallow for Daniel Scotts, Christopher Franks and the whole PAT team, it didn’t take long for them to bounce back and come up with…
