Bold 9900 gets BlackBerry OS 7.1 update

RIM has just announced that the BlackBerry OS 7.1 update is now available to BlackBerry Bold 9900 users in the Philippines which just started yesterday.

The BlackBerry 7.1 OS incorporates a new feature called BlackBerry Tag that can change the way BlackBerry users share information and content. By simply tapping their NFC enabled BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone against another NFC enabled BlackBerry smartphone, users can make sharing easier than ever. They can instantly invite a friend to BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), exchange contact information, documents, URLs, photos, apps and other multimedia content, and they can also pair their BlackBerry smartphone with an NFC enabled Bluetooth device.

BlackBerry 7.1 OS also now has the WiFi hotspot feature that allows connection of up to 5 wireless devices. We’re not sure how this will affect Globe’s BB Max 599 plan which comes with unlimited data that you cna now share with other devices like tablets and laptops.

The new BlackBerry 7.1 OS is now available for BlackBerry Bold 9900 users to download. Visit ph.blackberry.com/update, or use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software when updating your handsets.

Kelan pa nila tinerminate yung mobile hotspot? Di ko pa kasi napapagana… Kaka update ko lang ng 7.1

Unfortunately what globe told me is that according to their contract with RIM they only allowed postpaid users to have the mobile hotspot feature. Which doesn’t make any sense at all.

Unfortunately, after a month Globe terminated my Mobile Hotspot option since I’m on prepaid. Supposedly it is only for postpaid accounts. :|

It’s totally unfair to not allow prepaid subscribers on BBMAX to use the Mobile Hotspot feature. Called Globe many times and they insisted that this is only available to postpaid subscribers on BBMAX which totally makes no sense, since we’re both paying the SAME amount, using the SAME plan(BBMAX).

Have updated to BB OS7.1 for some time now just for the mobile hotspot option. Caution though, u will need the usb charger here coz it will suck dry your battery. I’ve been installing all unofficial OS releases of RIM with the latest at 7.1.0.402 for my 9810 unit under Smart.

How do I update on a mac? Or can it only be done on windows? My desktop manager doesn’t notify me about any software updates and I can’t find where I can prompt it either

I have a Curve 9360 which I updated to 7.1. I sent an email to Globe asking how could I enable the Mobile Hotspot function (it keeps on asking for a username and password which I didn’t know where to get).

Here’s what they sent me:
“go to Options > Advanced Options > go to TCP/IP > make sure the APN settings Enabled option is checked > key in the correct APN- http.globe.com.ph > Save and Close. Try to activate the mobile hotspot you will be prompted for a user name and password just log in your Blackberry Id.”

I inquired further if using the Mobile Hotspot would incur additional charges, and here’s their reply:
“You will not be charge for any additional since you are subscribe to BB Max, you can enjoy the unlimited surfing, Email, IM, Social Networking. Mobile hotspot is also part of BB Max.”

It totally works. But the speed and coverage is a big disappointment.

it’s disabled by default but you can call globe cs and have them send the proper service books to enable the feature. it’s totally working — don’t worry. the feature is ok alright — you’ll just be disappointed with the speed, a big LOOOOL.

I don’t think WiFi hotspot feature would affect Globe’s BBMAX offering since Globe allows tethering via USB cable or bluetooth without extra/hidden charges.

Btw, I’m using BB Curve 3G with OS6. The last time I used it as a modem (USB cable tethering) was last month. Hindi ko alam na disabled na ito to Globe prepaid users. Or baka sa OS7 lang disabled? :(
