PLDT breathes new life into fixed line services with Fiber

As the demand for high-speed broadband internet increases in the country, PLDT reinvigorates its fixed line services by powering it with fiber optic technologies.

During a technical briefing on Wednesday, PLDT-Smart Technology Group Head Rolando Peña said that fiber optic technology allows the fixed line network to transmit voice, data, and video over the internet at much higher bandwidths, faster speeds, and better quality.

“This enables us to offer advanced multi-media communications services not only through our fixed line network through fiber-to-the-home services but also through our mobile network using services like Long Term Evolution or LTE,” he added.

PLDT is also “fibering” its network from end-to-end which means they’re bringing fiber technology to the home, enterprises and cell sites. “The closer the fiber, the bigger the available bandwidth,” Peña said. PLDT’s total fiber optic network has already reached 54,000 kilometers, the most extensive in the country and four times more than what the competition is building.

Meanwhile, Smart Communications Inc. has already connected 100% of its cell sites in NCR to the PLDT group’s fiber infrastructure as part of its Fiber in the Loop (FITL) project. “With 100% of our Metro Manila network now ‘fibered’, Smart can further improve its range of wireless services and technologies such as LTE, HSPA+, 3G, and even 2G,” said Peña.

PLDT-SMART. E 4G nga lang di pa nila MA perfect within Metro Manila or NCR. Sa morning lang till lunch after that less than 1mbps na. Super bawal at madalas pa ma disconnect.

Hoping Competition make it more affordable, kumbaga 1k=10Mbps hehe.
    Kelan kya un? xD

Its a good thing fiber to home is being offered. Mas reliable ang fiber as a medium for transmission over other medium. They can offer cable tv service to the home over this fiber and bring down fees for internet as well for the next couple of years.

Telco is more on quantity of subscriber over quality bandwidth.

I wouldn’t. I don’t need that kind of speed for that kind of fee. Forget it. I can live with 1.5Mbps for P1,500 per month. Heck, I also use Sun Cellulars mobile broadband and I have no complaints with the speed I get from it.

I agree with chopotka. Masyadong mahal yung FTTH.

PLDT has rolled out Fiber To The Home(FTTH) for quite awhile already, if I’m not mistaken the pilot area were Dasma and Forbes in Makati. The guaranteed speed is not that astonishing, but the main problem here is affordability. Why would someone (even if you live in these posh villages) would want to pay 20K per month for an internet connection.

    Just my 2 centavos worth.

They also offer 8Mbps plan for 3.5K and that’s not expensive. The only question is can people avail the fibr service without needing to have a landline service.

It’s great to hear that they’re improving their networks… But we need a timeline =p

Kailan ba mararamdaman yung improvements?

“Smart can further improve its range of wireless services and technologies…”

I’m on the top floor (4th) of our apartment building, just a few hundred meters away from the base station, and yet my SmartBRO (a.k.a PLDT myBRO) connection still sux. Magagamit mo lang ng “medyo” matino from 1am to 7:30am. Lagpas dun, BANG! Tsk.
