What is Globe’s Magic IP and why is it free?

Been getting a lot of comments from readers regarding this certain Magic IP from Globe which allegedly allows users to be able to still surf the net even with zero load. So I sent out a message to @talk2globe if they knew anything about it.

All I got was this answer — @talk2globe: Nope! We don’t have or offer such service. .

However a number of Tweeps replied back to me saying it is possible.

I did a little bit of digging, found a number of instructions in the forums and tried it.

After a couple of tries, I was able to surf the net using a Globe Tattoo and a Globe SIM card with no load in it except for a few hundred free SMS credits. Nope, I’m not teaching you how to do it but if you’re motivated enough, a few Google searches will point you to the right direction.

This is because you can still dial-in and connect to their network without any load credits (what Globe does is cap your bandwidth down to 0kbps until you reload).

It looks like the Magic IPs are a block of IP addresses you can use as a proxy to bypass the bandwidth cap set by the network (or something to that effect).

Turns out that this loophole has been out as early as last year (some says it’s been there since 2009). The Magic IPs actually expire or is eventually blocked by Globe’s network engineers every month so users will look for a new set of IPs.

What’s actually more interesting is that a number of enterprising people who have early access to new sets of Magic IPs would actually peddle them — all for a very low price of Php200. Been seeing comments from some of them here but ignored it for the longest time.

not sure pero parang VPN technology naman ung ginagamit dyan. ginagamit lang ung USB stick to dial to a VPN server na hosted nung mga naniningil ng 200 per month. still utilizing some bandwidth but globe can control/block it by updating their firewall policy. ang problema, may mga corporate users na gumagamit din ng VPN na naissuehan ng postpaid Globe tatoo tulad dito sa company namin. good luck sa kanila.

I really wonder who coined that term “Magic IP”
technically speaking, there’s no magic involved. Maybe i’m just too sarcastic.

Globe resolves to capping to 0kbps downlinks for the sake of people who are using phones with modems that are 3G only and non GSM compatible. As these people cannot receive sms and calls if they simply block them once they ran out of prepaid credits. Until they find a way to render GSM bands as obsolete, this loophole would cease to exist.

On a side note, these IP’s btw are never internal proxies from Globe themselves. Im sure of that! Its simply other people setting up vpn servers bridged to their home pc’s internet connection for various reasons (it’s pretty cheap if you think about what the server’s owner gets in return). i do hope that everyone would be careful in choosing which ip you’d tunnel your internet connection to.

First, yung HSPA+ coverage nila di man lang pinalawak, tapos eto? Baka inside job din ito for all we know… It’s kinda unfair for us who are paying for supersurf dahil mahina na nga HSPA+/3G signal nila, bumabagal pa lalo.

    Boo Globe!

Prolly an internal proxy server for Globe Employee’s use. Kaya walang FaceBook according to the forums. That cuts down this hack’s usefullness to just 10%. hehehe Lakas kasi natin gumamit ng FB.

Globe’s engineers are probably too lazy to add a username password combo to the proxy server. Very tedious to update the list, specially if you have a lot of employees and many turnovers every month.

Actually, they can use Facebook for mobile. The IP’s use the port 8080/80 which isn’t secure so you can’t log into Facebook directly. If you’re using a plug it, you can log in through the mobile page first then switch to the regular Facebook afterwards.
