Why do Filipinos pay more for slower internet?

It’s just one of the many questions that kept on popping out in my head recently; why do we pay more for slower internet? Our neighboring countries such as Japan & South Korea feature the fastest internet speeds in the world, and here we are living with expensive and subpar connections.

filipino oligarchy internet

Here’s a rough comparison: in Japan, 35mbps costs at around Php2k a month more or less, wherein locally, a similar deal would be nearing Php6k.

Let’s tackle the basic economics here. If consumers demand for more data, the supply is supposed to meet it halfway at the equilibrium price – the point in a curve where the buyers and sellers agree on (*loud cough* unless we have no choice *cough*). If that has been the case for years already, then factors affecting supply such as technology & costs of production should have vastly improved already, thus shifting the supply curve to the right.

economics slower internet 2

In short, by this time and with this kind of demand, internet data, and SMS costs should have already decreased in price.

One thing to note though; substitutes are also popping out recently. 4G LTE is becoming the main focus for telcos now, so by increasing the price of broadband internet, demand for 4G LTE will increase – which might have influenced the high price of internet today. But even with that said, the development of our internet speed is still on the slow side.

A similar case is presented in one of our past articles too – “In the age of mobile data, is an SMS still worth Php1?”. Our guess is that, a slight decrease in price (even .20 cents) would decrease a company’s profit by hundreds of millions in a year.

Price control isn’t the best thing to do for economic growth, unless however abuse is shown by the producers. If that’s the case, then our government should step in and implement a price ceiling.

I guess we’re stuck here guys; we’re under oligopolists. It’s the same thing with gasoline, but more complicated because of the oil deregulation law – no government price controls will be there for it.

So what’s the answer? Why do we pay more for slower internet & less data? I guess the answer’s already above; we have no choice. Personally, a good start to fixing the problem would be to talk about it.

Maybe if the government and the companies start hearing that we care so much, or maybe we can push an amendment in the constitution that would trash the 60/40 ownership rule to attract foreign investors (more choices, more competition & more innovation), we’d have cheaper and faster network services in the Philippines.

Ironically, we were known as the “texting capital of the world” then, and the “social networking capital” now. PLDT is intentionally inhibiting that add to their poor service. IDK why MVP wins those executive awards. He’s one big douche girl.

san miguel had a chance to break the duopoly, but they delivered a poor quality product. and sila ang nagpasimuno ng capping. so its no wonder they are still not making money

globe followed suit by imposing its own caps. thats why a lot of people are afraid of globe. smart started capping too but its too soon so its rep hasnt suffered too much

this capping rep of globe imho hinders it from competing with pldt/smart

anything that you need to rely from the government… wag ka na umasa at walang mangyayari. They cant do anything to regulate telco’s. Even the senators that won the recent election are also a joke.

  6. Avatar for meh meh says:

Lack of government regulation is the biggest problem . Bad and slow/overpriced internet is what keeps businesses from investing in the country very often.

What the government needs to do is the following

    1. Force by law interconnectivity between isps

    2. Mandate a minimum speed to be considered broadband (such as 3Mbps)

    3. Regulate the cost, it makes no sense that Ukraine has very fast internet and it is a developing country while the philippines is in Asia and has nothing even close.

Im so tired of the excuses, the Gov here is not poor. The telcos are not poor, labor is cheaper here, so why can’t they get it together?

I envy Japan for having 2gbps internet for only 20k connection fee and 2k monthly fee. :( Why can private companies like sony and google sponsor the same thing in the Philippines? :(

Just want to share my experience. I’m currently staying/working in South Korea.

We are enjoying lightning fast internet connection of about 30mbps or more for just a price of 30,000 won (10000 won = 380php approx.).

Subcribing to phone plan of 55,000 won with 300call mins/300 text/unlimited data. Most people with smartphone use Kakao or naver for text messaging because it uses data not your text allowance. 4G/LTE connection is super fast.

I’m sorry if i have to compare kimchi with adobo… My point only is, why our telcos can’t replicate or improve their service offered?

Making calls to Philippines is so very exensive compared to other Asian countries.

    • Avatar for David Z David Z says:

I’m sure at least one person at those telcos would love to answer that question. It’s just that many people might think it’s just more excuses, especially with relations not exactly at their peak now.

    • Avatar for Blue Blue says:

Greed. We have oligarchs ruling telcos, oil, utilities like water and electricity – even banks! There is no true competition so the market doesn’t have a say. Why improve their services when they can keep raising their prices (and profits) while the customers can only whine but pay begrudgingly come their due dates? Government is but a toothless tiger and even a co-conspirator, with their relatives and friends sitting on the board of these oligarchs. Politicians and oligarchs happy, only the customers remain unhappy with subpar services at premium prices

@Vince i’ve been with Globe Broadband DSL for like 4 years already. And i don’t think they implement capping for DSL subscribers. For Tattoo broadband lang ata ung 1gb capping/day.

Sa akin, it’s partly due to Foreign Investments Act. If I remember it right, isa ang telco sa restricted (I think should be 60% owned by Filipinos). This limits foreign investments, which limits the competition. Hence, we might not have the cheapest prices, but we have one of the worst service.

    • Avatar for Reader Reader says:

Hmmm, you do know that “mono” in monopoly means “one”, right? You’re partly correct, but what you’re referring to is an oligopoly. FYI lang…you’re welcome. :)

there we have it. WE’VE GOT NO CHOICE, thats the ultimate answer. gahaman talaga kasi yang mga company sa pinas, like mahilig mag promise nang “UP TO…” hindi nga minsan maabot yung kalahati ng “UP TO na yan.” nice article bob.

Well…nobody really complain as one group that can really put pressure to the provider for better service…with the crappy internet service…maybe theirs a connivance between the provider and some people in the government…seen a lot of complain but looks like nobody got a satisfying answer with the provider…not only the speed but I complain also the coverage of the 3G/LTE…

  15. Avatar for Chris Chris says:

Kaso di related ang taas ng presyo ng internet sa presyo ng basic needs. Di parang gas o kuryente na tataas ang presyo ng ibang bilihin. Kung bumaba ang presyo ng internet mas marami kang bigas na kakainin.

Unless hightech ang paggawa ng bigas na gumagamit na ng internet hehehe

  16. Avatar for thth thth says:

try thailand. no unlimited 3G/mobile internet. limited 3G++ signals. they rely on wifi hotspots deployed by their telcos – unlimited but limited coverage.

  18. Avatar for Mark Mark says:

one of reason is that PLDT monopolizes the backbone of broadband in the Philippines other telecom companies are just buying bandwidth from PLDT except from Globe which I heard is building its own internet backbone. one solution of this that the Gov’t should really invest and build its own National Broadband Network so that we are dependent to PLDT.

  19. Avatar for While Youre At It While Youre At It says:

While you’re at it, why not include the price of other utilities? Water for instance? Our electricity rates is one of the most expensive in the world!

Also, your info on SMS BTW is wrong, one peso per text is still cheaper compared to other countries.

Furthermore, your analysis is so simple minded, you’re assuming that we are high school graduates. It’s not as simple as law of supply and demand. A more accurate measure would be the total number of subscribers instead of data consumed. Do you even wonder why ISP would want to make a cap to our data consumption? More data consumed does not necessarily mean more revenue.

You should also consider economies of scale, which is the most important factor when you’re making an analysis.

Well presumably you’re the only one finished a college degree or some sort of education you’re explaining. The author’s article just explaining his thoughts regarding what could be happening to this corrupt society.
If you really have studied then I guess you should know that our country is using coal for electricity not some kind of Nuclear fission of plutonium.
Maybe you just want to try and to live like us “timawa” or some “aliping sagigilid” of our society to taste what kind of life we are living in.
Don’t ever think you have the same thinking as everyone…

    • Avatar for While Youre At It While Youre At It says:

      @shut

So you’re stereotyping that most Abe’s blog reader are intended for retards? I suppose you are feeble minded like the author. The author is spreading FUD, his explanation of supply and demand in relation to data demand is dead WRONG. He has no business talking about economics, what he wrote is simply garbage. Now, if you believed what he wrote is true, then that’s your problem.

And as I’ve mentioned previously, high prices is due to a number of factors, and consuming more data is not one of them.
