Sky Broadband seems to be tipping the scale for broadband speeds with offerings of up to 6Mbps and 12 Mbps packages for residential accounts. Just got a pamphlet from their roving people asking residents to switch.
Previously the top speeds for residential DSL lines are somewhere between 3 to 5Mbps, but 12 Mbps? Sign me up!
The new packages are as follows:
Plan 6 Mbps
6Mbps downsload
1Mbps upload
Free Installation
Free Modem
Free SkyCable Gold plan
Free SkyVoice Plan 100 (Free calls to US & Canada)
Monthly Service Fee: Php3,999
Plan 12 Mbps
12Mbps download
1Mbps upload
Free Installation
Free Modem
Free SkyCable Gold plan
Free SkyVoice Plan 100 (Free calls to US & Canada)
Monthly Service Fee: Php5,999
They also offer a 15-day free trial but I’m not sure what’s the catch with that one.
I’m already spending Php2k on PLDT myDSL and Php500 for Destiny Cable. Upgrading to 6 Mbps means I have to fork out another Php1,500 per month.
It might sound like a good deal especially for those looking into really fast download speeds but I’m in the fence when it comes to reliability.
Any Sky Cable or Sky Broadband user out there who can share some feedback on service reliability (i.e how many downtimes a year, resolution time, etc.)?

Keep well away from Sky Broadband. I’m in Makati and for at least a year their ‘service’ has been down 30% of the time.

Try Eastern Telecom (now Eastern Communications). I heard they were down three hours in four years.
BTW, you glagged an initial comment as a duplicate, This is also not good.

I think Eastern Communications’ target market are business owners. So their price might be hefty. Specially that there are no info about how much their plans are in their website. But thanks anyway. Maybe I’ll consider them when I don’t find any good ISP’s.
*Sigh* good ISP’s are so hard to find these days… wondering when our country will have fast internet providers like what that guy’s talking about on post #43…
I switched from Bayantel dsl to skybroadband about 2 months ago and what a huuuge mistake! It’s jumping from the frying pan to the fire! From the time I connected, there wasn’t a day my connection didn’t go down.. I am from Quezon City, got the 6 mbps plan and the fastest I get is 2 mbps if I’m lucky during the times I am connected. This could be the cause of the ecg abnormality I was recently diagnosed with. But seriously, this is enough to give you a heart attack!!
I have called globe to survey my area and I have decided to give this thing up. But I will fight for the right to do so without the pre termination penalty. This is not what I signed up for!!!
Blah. Forget it. Sky Broadband isn’t even responding to my inquiry email. What more if I’m already a subscriber?
Maybe I’ll just stick to PLDT until a good ISP comes out.
And just a tip to those who are complaining about Sky Broadband. Maybe you should go take legal actions against them. I mean, you’re not getting what you paid for right? And still, they advertise these kind of speeds and yet, its not even the average speed. That’s called FALSE ADVERTISING.
Its like what happened to Comcast. Although its kind of different because Comcast was saying that they give unlimited internet connection but the reality is that they are limiting the bandwidth of their users. And their subscribers filed a class suit against them.
Hi.I applied for the 15 day trial. The nice lady even verified that the service is now available in my street.April 2, I waited with anticipation on surfing the net and downloading at 12MBPs of dedicated service compared to the sucky BayanDSL.(It takes 5 days for a serviceman to fix my connection and I just live 2 blocks away from the Bayantel office)-and lo and behold after, calling them 6 times because the fail to call me back 6 times-I was informed that my street is not yet ready for SKYBroadband services. The street next to me is though, the squatters area…
Hay,major disappointment and epic fail on the Lopez group.
Despite reading a few negative thoughts of sky broadband, i still really want to try the 15 free days at least. But when i called the number, they told me that my marikina area (the only condo building i believe in marikina) isn’t supoorted. AHAHAH!!! Im using globe right now, but its sooo slow (384kb i think). with sky broadband, i can get 3mb for around 2k, but if my area isn’t supported i might as well pay globe for there 2mb plan for 2k (with sky, i get an extra 1mb for that price) but then i’ll have to stick with the new globe plan because of the 1 year lock in. what to do, what to do…
Shh… My neighbor here in Ayala Alabang has Sky Broadband 6mbps. The network is not secured so I was able to connect :).
I’m trying to download torrents but it seems that torrents are not working. I’m guessing that Sky Broadband has blocked Torrent trackers, or that my neighbor has blocked it. But if my neighbor isn’t knowledgeable enough to secure his/her network, then I don’t think he/she will know how to block ports and IPs.
I’m not really sure, but if Torrents are blocked in Sky Broadband, then I see no use on subscribing to it.
Do not get fooled (like I did), Sky Broadband is the pit. My 15 days trial went very well, I confirmed and BANG, torrents started getting totally sluggish. Then I started getting private IP on my modem and no Internet at all at night: “scheduled maintenance” they said on the phone. It happens many times. I had to keep my PLDT DSL as a backup for my VoIP phone.
1) Reliability: horrible
2) Speed: good if you donwload from microsoft.com or ibm.com. P2P is horrendous
Bottom line, if your area is on NGN for PLDT, then go there.
@Pierre
May I ask what improvements will NGN give? Because the PLDT tech that went here said that they would probably finish installing NGN’s in our area by Q3 or Q4 this year. And if I’m right, NGN stands for Next Generation Networking?
Hehehe , Great ! 12Mbps Broadband .
It should be a big competitor of PLDT Dsl.
But , my friends told me about that 12Mbps Broadband , it was great but the area of installation was limited only in Metro Manila , I am not sure if it is true .
12mb sounds like appealing, it could be a great jump fwd for users here.
But …
There’s always a but :)
12mb to their facility is nice but after what do we do ?
No telco provider can guaranty you to reach your speed outside PH.
Make the test with speed.net and you will understand what i’m talking about.
Local Telco providers, even the biggest, still have poor peering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peering) and only focus locally.
That’s explain you will have an hard time to take advantage of ur 12mb :)
So far only business lines are really providing an acceptable quality outside the country but nobody can affort those.
Just to finish :)
Why microsoft or google are fast and not the others ?
Those are using CDN (Content delivery networks) like akamai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_Delivery_Network)
It makes simply their content available closer to the end users, reducing latency and improving the speed.
So more far the content it is, less u’re lucky if you’re in PH :)
I been using skybroadband 6mbps for almost a week now! Unfortunately i cant avail the 15 day free trial coz im not a skycable subs. before.
So far we never had a problem, but we only manage to get the promised 6 mbps around 3-5AM the rest of the day the speed average would be 4mbps.
My torrents are working well, also have a US number coz it comes with a sky voice plan 100, though i dont have any1 to call in the US :)
All in all compare to my ISp before which is smartbro and globetelecom, its still better coz of the higher download speed it manage to offer, havent experience downtime yet,(with globe i never did too, for 1 year or maybe i just havent noticed it coz i dont go online all the time)
For me its worth a try. specially if you have the 15 day free trial
I have bayandsl for over some years now and mydestiny cable as a backup…
Bayandsl is ok…but the capacity here in the philippines of the backbones…so the connection to the internet is just too low.
As most websites are hosted in the US and not in PH we all make huge traffic from lets say 6 PM till 11 PM when the internet cafe’s closes. (some)
Then the speed goes up again.
So no matter what connection you have, it comes to the capacity of the network and that still needs to be improved to handle these kind of speeds.
Sure it will be faster on specific times, but dont expect it always.
We’ve had Globe Broadband for the past 3 months and although it has great speed and reliability in our area, the modem itself could not connect to ANY router we stick into it. We have 4 pc’s at home as this functions as a homebased office and we badly need a router. What’s worse, we called their CS and they a 15 year old sounding guy sheepishly informed us that they DO NOT SUPPORT technical problems with connecting routers, only with connecting their modems.
We removed our modem and stuck the phoneline into a ProLink modem/router and all goes fine except that the modem/router is very picky with the websites it can access even if we alter our firewalls/proxies. What’s more, YouTube stops downloading 10% into the file meaning for a 10 minute video, we could only watch 1 min of it and then boom, it stops.
SkyBroadband came today with our 15-day tril and I tell you the 1st 2 hours was great. I could open my Central Desktop and we have a router connected so all pc’s have the same internet connection. I went to sleep and when I came back online at 10pm, I find out that downloading ANYTHING from ftp’s or torrents are 90%impossible. For a CrazyKart download that took me 45 mins with globe, its taking me 4-10 hourse depending on the really shifty file transfer speed ranging from 200kbps-20kbps or lower. Grrr. This is not what we signed up for!
We’re looking for reliability, not just speed as we do work from home and internet connection with our clients is a must.
We are in Pasig area.
Hope this doesn’t go on for the rest of the trial. This is baaaad for a 1st impression.
Nice info..grabe mahal ng monthly fee nya..pero up to 12mbps..walang LAG lag issue sa mga online gamers..
I wonder if the problem regarding torrents really is from SkyBroadband. Because there are some routers with firewalls that prevent transfer of data. One way to fix this is manually set up your router to allow the transfer. This process if called “port forwarding”. The website portforward.com offers a detailed guide on how to set up your router.
Currently on a 15-day trial with Sky Broadband… Been connected with PLDT MyDSL for the past 3 years or so…
Did some PC Pitstop Test on both, got the 3rd trial for both:
Sky Broadband (LAN Cable) Plan 999
Download 1199 kpbs
Upload 40 kbps
MyDSL (Wireless) Plan 999
Download 1004 kbps
Upload 200 kbps
I honestly prefer the setup of the Sky Broadband, but MyDSL has speed for upload activities. Does anyone have the same experience? Thanks!
BTW- No catch on the 15-day trial. :)
do u have any contact details for sky?
I don’t have any access to the net at the moment
I would like to know if SkyBroadband has too many downtimes. Like give me the time when to when, and how often. Because right now, im using globe and it takes 0.1-0.5 seconds for an enemy to die. This is a huge gap for pro gamers.
Current Internet : Globe 2mpbs shh! Im also kinda like tweaker, so I tweak the internet speed legally
Current Place : Ayala Alabang
Current Download speed + DAP 9.0 + Tweak = 200-300Kbps
Ping: 100(barely) – 999(sometimes)
Downtime: 1-5times in a 5 months. The Whole morning
I think now, its slower. The ping used to be fast, but not now. There is nothing wrong with my PC as of I know how to do anything to my PC parts and Windows.
Pls. Give me the Current Download speed and Ping, and number of downtimes a week and in a day. and how long. Thank you
you’re computer knowledged? you can measure 0.1-0.5 seconds of lag? you’re kinda like pro gamer? you’re also kinda like tweaker? ayala alabang? but DAMN man, work up on your english PLEASE.
