LG Portable External DVD Rewriter

This portable DVD writer from LG is one of the slimmest I’ve seen so far. With a maximum read and write speed of just 8x, it should suffice the occasional need to hook up a netbook to an external optical drive.

One of the items I enumerated earlier on my post about “How would you extend the netbook?” was an equally portable and lightweight external optical media drive.

Weighs about 380 grams and is only 21mm thick. The MSI Wind and the LG drive’s combined weight is almost the same as that of an Asus Eee PC 1000H. The dimensions though would have occupied over half the my MSI Wind. It’s a handy external drive which you can bring along on long trips where you’d anticipate you’ll need it and at the same time can just leave at home on regular days.

Priced just over Php4,000 though so it’s a bit expensive.

Cool, I finally stumbled to a site about this! I was daydreaming about it this morning (well technically evening dreaming as it was evening time ) and now I discover this site. Coincidence alright. Might be checking back!

    child’s toy.

the wonders of portable DVD drive.
very very very prone to human damage.

here’s what you do (for netbook owners who do have a Desktop PC)

get a IDE / SATA connector cable
unplug ur DVD ROM Drive to ur desktop PC’s motherboard.

premium price is probably from the slim form factor and the power draw from the usb port(?).

an average DVD writer drive costs about Php1,500 plus a 5.25″ enclosure from CDRKing fetches about Php700. this option is more future-proof but the enclosure comes with a big and ugly power brick so minus points for portability.

the only time i needed to use an optical drive for my wind is when i was installing linux on it (pendrive doesnt work for my choice distro). i had a spare cd drive and an old 3.5″ HDD enclosure. i just attached the drive in the ide and power cables and was able to use it. its ugly but it works when i need it. :)

    ciao!

This LG ODD uses ‘tray load’ configuration while other ODDs like the Samsung SE-T084L slim external DVD writer uses ‘slot-in’ configuration

Sayang wala ako nakuhang Lite-On DX-8A1H-05. Mas mura sana. Kaya will just use Samsung SE-T084L sa ASUS N10J-A1. Sana gumana. :)
