RedFox to offer WizLib eBook Reader

During our forum on eReaders with the CyberPress one of the speakers, who is from RedFox, presented their very own version of an eBook Reader (eReader) which they said will be released locally.

Dubbed the RedFox WizLib, these thin and light eReaders come in three sizes — a 5″ display, a 6″ display and a 9.7″ display. They are also very thin and light — starting from 10.2mm going down to just 7.7mm.

Powered by the same technology as the Amazon Kindle, the RedFox WizLib will have options for WiFi and 3G connectivity so you can use the device to download content and also surf the net. It also supports a large number of file formats and can even play mp3s.

RedFox representatives could not give an exact price but they said the smallest model could be in the Php12k range and the bigger one is around Php15k.

They will be sending me review units once everything is ready so I’ll post more of these when I get them.

    Yuga, does the screen also do a refresh when turning pages? Flicker effect?

    This is great news! Libraries which are planning to go “digital” can use this instead of importing Kindles and Nooks.

  3. yuga says:

    @rom – yup!

    wait, the interface looks better than the Kindle. May icons.

    I saw this already not too long ago – Jerome Gotangco has one but not from RedFox. It is, if I dare say, exactly the same.

    Sorry to nitpick but as one of the blogs us Pinoys look up to, I think you can do a bit better on the writing, Yuga. Are these articles even checked before publishing? I count two errors already in the first sentence alone.

    I’m not one to criticize, especially on a blog I enjoy but I hope we can show those other tech blogs that we can at least match their post quality.

  7. yuga says:

    @glenn – it’s very hard to kill the habit of “publish now, edit later”.

    I’ll buy this if the battery can last up to a week of exhaustive usage.

  9. hubes says:

    @yuga is there a browser program where you can check email and surf?

  10. yuga says:

    @jpcaparas – yes, they say it does. I will have to confirm that once I get to test it myself. The Kindle can do 3 weeks daw e.

    @hubes – try Flock.

    Do we really even need another ebook reader? does redfox plan to put up their own online store for the content?

  12. Mike B. says:

    Hi Yuga,

    Any idea what formats will it support? Will it be limited to the Amazon Kindle format? Or can it handle PDFs, docs, html, rtf and txt? Thanks!

    @teknisyan – it’s like asking if we need another laptop or another cellphone.

    @mike – they did not specify but I remember them saying it can do Kindle, Nook, ePub, PDF, Text, etc.

    This is good to know but I hope they lower the price considering the Kindle is now down to $189 or roughly P8,700.

    @Rico

    I was thinking of that too. With the basic idea that the average Filipino makes only about 10k-15k monthly, why crop up an ebook reader that costs two times more than the Kindle?

    Either way, it’s still a good start.

    I hope LG releases its own ebook reader soon. They offer really low prices on their products that are being sold in the Philippines.

    Time to spice up the competition!

  18. Calvin says:

    these are pricey. i expect the lowest model to be way below 10k. the sony readers are getting cheaper also.

    With the prices you mentioned that they should be offering them, do they really intend to compete with the Kindle? With that price, and if I have to choose between it or the Kindle, I’d definitely go with the Kindle!

    hmmm mahal ang price… compare to branded…
    as of now wala pa ako tiwala sa redfox.. made in the phil kung di ako nagkakamali

  21. lawrence says:

    I wish they can invest on tablets (android) than these stuffs. I mean tablets can beat what these readers can offer any time of the day.. like efficient web browsing..proper video playing, etc. and its a little steep for the price..

    @yuga

    please suggest redfox to try tablets products. Im sure there is a bigger market for it than ereaders. Thanks!

    Wake me up when CDRKing offers a cheaper version. I’ll just get a netbook in the meantime.

  24. yuga says:

    @lawrence – actually, they’ll have one in September. just waiting for the photos and details over email.

  25. hubes says:

    @yuga – flock can run in kindle or this e-reader?
