Facebook blocks Burger King App

A Facebook app called The Whooper Sacrifice was built by Burger King to promote the fast-food chain’s burgers on the social networking website. Apparently, despite its popularity, Facebook didn’t liked the app and was shut down eventually.

Burger King’s pitch — drop ten (10) of your Facebook friends and get a free Whooper.  You can only get one free Whooper so even if you dropped 50 friends, you still get one burger.

What would you do for a free WHOPPER? Would you insult an elected official? Would you do a naked handstand? Would you go so far as to turn your back on friendship? Install WHOPPER Sacrifice on your Facebook profile and we’ll reward you with a free flame-broiled WHOPPER Sandwich when you sacrifice 10 of your friends.

Still, the app got 86,655 monthly active users and a total of 233,906 friendships were dropped just before it officially closed.

What prompted the sudden closure was that Facebook didn’t like the app sending notices to users they’ve been dropped in exchange of a burger.

Facebook has disabled WHOPPER Sacrifice after your love for the WHOPPER Sandwich proved to be stronger than 233,906 friendships.

Facebook just wanted to tweak that part of the app but Burger King thought it wouldn’t be fun anymore so they conceded to Facebook closing it down.

It’s a shame, really. The Whooper Sacrifice showed us how much friendship costs these days. *heh*

I would not trade friends w/ a burger. My friends cost 200 Burger King outlets.

haha, thats one unique promotional strategy. Although I’d drop ten friends for a burger, I wouldn’t risk it, especially if the ones that I’m gonna drop are special ones. nyaha!

@Lito – the primary objective was for Facebook users to install the app, the secondary objective is to make them drop 10 friends. these 10 friends will then get a notification that “a friend just dropped in exchange for a burger”. That person will then discover the app and probably do the same to their friends. It’s viral.

Never installed the app because I’m not that active in Facebook.

Though the thought of dropping friends from my list for something never occurred to me, it did show just how online friendship costs nowadays.
