Smart WiFi launched

smart wifiLaunched just yesterday, Smart WiFi is a new broadband internet service which allows users to get connected wirelessly thru Smart’s cell sites. The only thing you need is an outdoor antenna to serve as transceiver on any of Smart’s hundreds of cell sites nationwide.

Maximum bandwidth is up to around 128kbps and promo price starts at Php788/month. It’s an easy and affordable alternative if you don’t have phone lines in the neighborhood. This is gonna be a big hit once they find a way to bring access down to handhelds and portable devices (read: Tungsten T5 & Life Drive).

    Vinvinvin,

Thank you kindly for your replies.

My friend will be an average surfer of the net, and using her webcam via messenger services. Gameplaying and the downloading of large files are not of her concern.

The speeds you listed that are advertised, if they truly deliver those speeds, should be enough for what she needs. My concern is all the postings I have seen about all the “DOWN TIME” Smart Wifi seems to have, and not the actual speed that is advertised. Do you deem them to correct in their advertised speeds? Can you give me a guesstimate of your “DOWN TIME” with their service? I mean, when it is down, is it down for a few hours or a few days? Is it down 3 or 4 times a month or maybe once every two months?

You also stated that Smart Wifi would be her only option. So, you are telling me there is nothing else available in the Butuan, Mindanao area? I am not very familiar with the Philippines, especially the Provinces, so my apologies in asking the same questions again.

    Thank you kindly, Anthony

Istallation fee is Php 1000.00 + 1 month advance MSF. Depends on your plan (Php 788 = 256kbps max or Php 988 = 384kbps max ) VAT included…

    Anthony,

Is your friend a heavy internet user? If not, he/she may use Smart WiFi because there are no other choices. For chatting & surfing, its OK but not recommended for gaming, VOIP, and large file downloads…

I have just read many of the postings about Smart Wifi, and the horror stories being told are scary. Anyone, outside of Metro Manila and other big cities, have any good experiences with Smart Wifi? My main concern is for my friend in Butuan, Mindanao. Any idea of how it would work in that area?

Any alternatives to Smart Wifi for broadband service in Butuan, Mindanao? My friend does not have any telephone lines in the neighborhood, so I assume that would rule out DSL, and I highly doubt Cable connection is viable since there are no cable lines in the neighborhood. Are there any companies in the Butuan area that are offering broadband that my friend may not know about?

My friend is completely dumbfounded when it comes to anything about internet service, and I am in the USA, so I would really appreciate any kind of information anyone has to offer.

May someone help me with some of my questions?

I am in the USA and it is very difficult for me to get any hard facts about Smart Wifi service in the Philippines.

I am looking to get Smart Wifi hooked up for my friend in Butuan, Mindanao. Can someone let me know if there is an installation fee, if there is one, how much, and how much the monthly fee (VAT included) would be?

Also, I see Smart Wifi on some sites being advertised as having speeds up to 256 kps and on some sites at 128 kps. Does anyone know what the true speed being offered is, assuming there is a clear line between the home base unit and the cell tower.

Anykind of help would be highly appreciated.

    Thank you kindly, Anthony

I now think and believe with all the recent speed tests I’ve done with at least 10 speed meter applications that SMART has the capability to boost the bandwidth of the virtual connection of subscribers’ computers to particular networks hosting speed meter applications that SMART thinks that its subscribers usually use.

    as what VINVINVIN said….

    ————-

THEREFORE DO NOT ALWAYS BELIEVE THE RESULT OF SPEED METERS YOU USE. I RECOMMEND USING SPEED METERS THAT ARE NOT SO POPULAR. www.testmy.net has been SMART’s target, now I think http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ has been included by SMART in its bandwidth boosting algorithm.
Up to this moment http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/test_0150.asp yields RELIABLE results. It conforms with your browsing speed UP TO THIS MOMENT.
Some PRO-SMART out there would say again that this is just a presumption. Yes! a presumption BASED on ACTUAL TESTS and experience!!!
