Huawei has now released the Huawei Y5 2017 and it’s available via Lazada (see product page here). The Y5 2017 is Huawei’s budget smartphone with sells for Php5,890.
The device looks very similar to the Huawei GR5 (2017) though a tad bit smaller at just 5.0 inches. It’s got a solid build quality although the back panel is just made of polycarbonate material.
The 5-inch display has an HD (720p) resolution using IPS LCD. The entire front panel is covered in glass although the side bezels are a bit too thick to our liking.
There are no physical buttons up front but the camera comes with a front-facing LED flash along with a few sensors. It looks like Huawei is chasing people who are fond of selfies with this handset.
The power button and volume controls are on the right side and there’s a dedicated physical button on the left that’s customization to a number of shortcuts you want to do (defaults to Google Search at the moment).
The micro-USB port is at the bottom along with the speaker grill while the 3.5mm audio jack is up top.
There’s a removable plastic back cover that exposes the battery (covered with a metal plate screwed to the chassis) and two SIM card slots (one nano-SIM and one micro-SIM) together with a dedicated microSD card slot. The dimpled back cover has enough texture to provide a goo grip with one hand.
The camera at the back has an 8MP f/2.0 sensor with dual flash.
The device runs Android 6.0 marshmallow with a custom EMUI 4.1. It’s snappy and responsive but just with the basic stuff. We’re not really expecting much from the quad-core Mediatek processor and 2GB of RAM.
