For almost 2 decades, ABS-CBN has held the top spot among TV networks here in Mega Manila. That was until GMA (the consistent no. 2 network) overtook them by the latter part of last year. And from them on, TV ratings have been saying everything—a lot more people here in the Metro watch GMA shows. What has happened to ABS-CBN? Ever since, I’ve always been a kapamilya and I’m not happy with what’s been happening.
I’ll lay down some reasons for the fall of ABS to the no. 2 spot and at the same time some advice. (This whole thing is just based on my humble opinion)
Piracy (of shows and of artists). Everyone is guilty of it. Pirating another network’s artist or show gives the public a bad impression. Originality has always been as issue. We always hear different shows bragging that they were the first. Yeah right. God knows who was first.
Reprogramming/rescheduling of shows. Clearly, ABS-CBN has been quilty of this. While it’s not so bad to change schedules, doing so in a seemingly constant manner is another thing. I remember ABS advertising a reprogrammed primetime and then just a day after that new primetime schedule, the shows were rearranged again. Talk about constancy. As they say, patience is a virtue. Why not wait a few days to observe the effects before doing an action? I don’t think it’s a good idea just to base on overnight ratings.
ABS-CBN also has this habit of transferring a low-rated show to a new and much more profitable timeslot or even worse, drop it. ABS has already dropped a number of its long-running shows and replaced them with new ones. Also, it’s as if ABS-CBN has a rule to terminate new programs if they won’t rate competitively in a given timeframe. GMA, on the other hand, keeps its shows even though they are not rating well. GMA hoped that the people would come to love their shows and the people did. Most of GMA’s better rated shows now have been airing a little while longer. Somehow, a show’s length of airing is a factor. Look at Eat Bulaga. It has been GMA’s pride and glory in the noontime. The worst thing ABS did was to terminate a show which has not yet ended. Surely, that action irritated the show’s patrons.
Revamps. These were also constant in most of ABS-CBN’s shows. Whether a change of artists or structure, this has been a habit of ABS. Sadly to say, most revamps fail to make the shows better. Take the original GAME KNB? for example. It would surely have not lost if they did not reformat it.
Animes. GMA totally dominated the afternoon timeslot because of its anime programs. ABS-CBN had good animes with them but they just didn’t handle them properly. ABS has this thing with animes that when the story reaches the climax or the end, they would re-air the episodes from the beginning. I really hated this.
Of course, it has not been all ABS-CBN’s fault. GMA just became lucky with its shows. The phenomenal Starstruck, Mulawin and Extra Challenge—these shows gave the primetime to GMA.
ABS-CBN has to start producing fresh quality shows and not just some crap or remake of other shows. And when they started one, they should handle it ’til the end.
I can’t think of anymore but there are still lots of reasons of course. I hope ABS-CBN would regain the top spot again. I am still with Channel 2. But they should start acting now. They may have held the No.1 spot in the last many years, but that was the past. It’s time to regain what rightfully belongs to them–and they should prove that it should really belong to them.

GMA may have ruled over Mega Manila but ABS-CBN still holds most of the Philippines. This last weekend for example, one does not need ratings to find out that ABS-CBN’s still No. 1 in Cebu. The video footages of both networks are enough proof.
Again, this is just my humble opinion.
UPDATE:
ABS-CBN is re-airing the phenomenal Meteor Garden which started the whole Asianovela craze. A good move?

I am a pure KAPAMILYA… and I hate what is happening now at ABS-CBN. Wish ABS would ome up with good shows that would bring back the spotlight on them!

1. Noontime – PGKNB? and Wowowee is working out its way having to beat a 25-year old show, but ratings are very good for a 3-month ld tandem!
2. Afternoon – those KAPAMILYA CINEMA must be changed with ABS-CBN’s own teleserye. Look ABS is very good in making teleserye, so why not try to have teleserye in the asfternoon
3. News – ABSCBN needs to gear up its News Center with more competent and dignified approach! Hey, I like Karen’s reaction to Susan roces being hysterical at her husbands funeral!
4. Weekend – sunday shows are no ABS but saturdays must be worked out, ETK is a nonsense, sayang yung S2!
5. Syempre, Primetime block – this is GMA’s glory for bringing th No. 1 spot on them…. why not have a Juday-Piolo Teleserye again and another of that Jericho+Kristine+Diether, people still love them!

im really a “kapamilya†ever since i was a kid..sa sobrang maka-abs kme we even bought a new tv na pina-set lang namin para sa ch.2 and no other channels. even my cousin who is only 7 years old hindi nanonood ng gma,corny raw and gaya-gaya..well we cant blame her.

I think abs-cbn still number network here in the Philippines as well as dominated na rin sila around the world because of TFC. Kaya Kapamilya, Congratulations keep up your good work. Ang GMA ay namamayagpag sa NCR pero nangungulelat sa URBAN RATING na may 26% lang laban sa ABS-CBN na may 49% sa total URBAN rating na nakalap ng AGB ACNielsen Rating survey. Nabablitaan na ang GMA ay may 32% audience share sa Mega Manila habang ang ABS-CBN ay 26% audience share.

Meteor Garden is the most watched program in the Philippines with not less than 69.9% of rating in AGB ACNIELSEN NATIONAL MEDIA RESEARCH. Meteor Garden got 48.7 million viewers in the first week, 48.2 in the second, and so on increasing and decreasing.

What is the difference between ratings and share?
Rating is the average number of people who are watching for every minute the program aired. It can be expressed in absolute or percentage values. So, if program X has a rating of 100,000, it means that on the average, 100,000 viewers are watching the program each minute.
In contrast, share is the proportion of viewers watching a specific program out of all people watching television during the airing of said program. Unlike ratings, share can only be expressed in percentage values. For example, program Y airs every 12:00 am – 1:00 am, and has a share of 50%, it means that half or 50% of all people watching TV at 12:00 am – 1:00 am are watching program Y.

TAM METHODOLOGY:
Step 1: Each AGB operation begins with a large-scale study to determine the vital characteristics of the universe that affect viewing. Aptly called the Establishment Survey (ES), the results of this study will establish the composition of the viewing panel that we will eventually measure. The respondents of this study serve as a pool of possible recruits for the panel. Conducted regularly, this study is used to check the relevance of the existing panel against the universe through time.
Step 2: With the characteristics of the universe at hand, the next step is to build the panel and recruit families that are willing to collaborate. AGB then installs peoplemeters in these households and train the family members in its proper use.
Step 3: Each working TV set in a household is fixed with a peoplemeter and a remote control. Only one peoplemeter is connected to the telephone line or GSM network for data downloading. This is the “master‿ peoplemeter. The rest of the peoplemeters in the household pass their data to the master, hence the name “slave‿ peoplemeter. AGB Philippines uses the TVM 2 peoplemeter – a modular nature device that allows for various data transmission techniques – via stationary phones, radio waves and cellular phones.
Step 4: Each night, data for the day from the meters are downloaded via telephone lines or GSM lines for households without landline connection, by the POLLUX located at the AGB Philippines offices.
Step 5: At the heart of the system is Pollux, AGB’s proprietary production software. Aside from assisting in panel management, Pollux prompts the retrieval of viewing data, which undergoes a series of fundamental processes of consolidating, validating and expanding the data, thus obtaining a viewing data of the highest quality.
Step 6: Our in-house TV events monitoring group takes care of this. This 24-hour operation makes sure that every event that took place in the TV is logged in the TelePad, another proprietary software for TV events monitoring. The events data are fed to Pollux for consolidation with the viewing data for a complete TV viewing behavior data
Step 7: For viewing data analysis, we have also developed a proprietary software suit for users to maximize the potentials of our data. The AGB WorkStation if composed of three analysis tools: TeleMonitor for viewing behavior analysis; TeleSpot for Advertisement campaign and expenditure analysis, and AdPlan for Advertisement campaign planning. It is supported by the expertise of AGB Media Services, the corporate division of the group, and fueled by the feedback of thousands of users worldwide.

totoo yan! no. 1 talaga ang abs d2 sa cebu,a nd in the whole phil.! bakit ba ang gma nagsasaya na no.1 daw sila,eh sa metro manila lang naman! ang dapat na tawagin na no.1 ang mas pinanonood ng mga pilipino sa buong bansa! manggagaya pa ang gma7! kung hindi nagsimula ang marina, ide wala sana yang lahat na fantaserye sa primetime ng7! going bulilit was also pirated! asap, may sop! fanatic, may gigsters!MMK, may magpakailan man and etc! To abs, magaganda naman ang shows niyo, kaya naman ako kapamilya! but there are some suggestions from your viewers, that you have to listen to make your programs even rates better from the other.

Tapos kung totoong nauna cla sa pinas dahil sabi nla 55 years na daw cla bat d ko napansin na nagcelebrate cla ny golden aniversary nla. bat ngaun lang. then most of there young talents was left out of abs my kapamilya. mga trapo. ang babastos pa like richard gomez, joey de leon and joey marquez will in fact those two guys were a former part of palibhasa lalaki. those were INGRATO.
D2 sa mindanao masyadong malayo ang rating ng abs cbn. lets say if metro manila has 10 million people with minus that to 80million that gives roughly 70M of people. say luzon has 30M population, visayas has 20M, and mindanao has 30M. say gma holds 6 million in Metro manila, that leaves abs 4 M. the question is how about in mindanao and visayas area. did AC NIELSEN take the population destribution where in household with tv units are tunned to abs say 80 percent of 60 million that gaves abs a total viewer of roughly 3/4 of total viewers. so if a family has a tv unit, their kapitbahay also has the tendency to join the household with tv units in watching programs specially in rural areas.
the point is that u cant WEIGTH 80% of rating to MEGA MANILA ALONE, eventhough mega manila has a lot of tv units the ratio of people in rural areas watching tv is higher compared to manila. like in cebu. the population of cebu is over a million with just say 100000 tv units in the island and that tv is being shared by magkakapitbahay. that the typical life outside mega manila.
So the weight gevin by ACNIELSEN MEDIA RESEARCH which is the basis of GMA’s claim is irrational much compared to ABG NIELSEN which i believe is the world leader in media rating survey.
To deduce AGBNIELSEN FORMULA IN CALCULATION IS MUCH ACCEPTABLE THAN AC NIELSEN.

I regularly travel the key cities in the Phils. I must say that majority (85%) are tune in to ABS-CBN. Because of the quality of the Kampamilya shows, I watch regularly the gag shows such as Bora, funtaserye such as Kampanerang kuba, and fun shows as Wowowee , ASAP, etc. However, ABS-CBN’s news and curent events programs, I STOPPED watching due to disgusting biases against the government and sensationalism compared to GMA 7 which is surprisngly objective and subtle. I’m sad to see Julius and Tintin of MUP and most of the news reporters to be politically critical and becoming mouthpieces of the opposition.
I hope ABS-CBN stays apolitical and just present quality shows which it has done for decades now.

Comment lang po… I’m from Cebu and personally marami dito ang nanonood ng GMA. regarding po sa sinasabing gaya-gaya ang GMA. Paki analyze nalang po. GMA came up with Extra Challenge which prompted ABS to reformat the show Victim to a challenge type of show, Remember Mulawin which prompted ABS to immediately relase Krystala even though sobrang pangit ng effects nito. Starstruck which prompted ABS to do the same kind of show with SCQ in which ngayon parang napabayaan na yata ang mga kasali nito di kagaya ng GMA na talagang they take care of their talents no need to prove my point here just see nalang kung saan na umabot ang careers nila. pati na rin ang Bitoy’s funniest home videos na dali daling gumawa ang ABS ng sariling version na Videoking… Ang Darna na planong tapatan ng Panday dahil sa superhero type of teleserye ito. Pati na rin Encantadia na tinapatan naman agad ng Kampanerang Kuba dahil din Telefantasya ang tema nito. You decide, don’t be hypocrites and learn to admit defeat! Marami pa akong masasabi pero mukhang edukado naman kayo and would definitely get my point.

ABS-CBN’s Filipino Channel unfazed by GMA’s new PinoyTV

July 16, 2005 could have gone down the network war history books as “the fight for Los Angeles.†Originally, ABS-CBN 2 and GMA 7 talents were going head to head in simultaneous concerts at the colossal Rose Bowl Stadium, and the cultural hub, The Mark Tater Forum Theater, respectively; but at the last minute, GMA 7 announced the cancellation of its show and issued the following statement:
“Due to a serious problem with one of the pay-TV carriers of GMA PinoyTV, we are postponing our live SOP GMA PinoyTV Launch Show scheduled on July 16, 2005, at The Forum in Los Angeles, California. We intend to proceed with the show at a later date, when we have resolved our carriage problem.â€
And so, a week from Saturday, the gang of the ABS-CBN noontime show ASAP ’05, led by Gary Valenciano and Zsa Zsa Padilla, and Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda’s The Buzz will have the LA Filipino community all to themselves in the 90,000-seater stadium. Calling it the “US Kapamilya Caravanâ€â€”following the “2005 Summer Kapamilya Caravan†in Cebu, Iloilo and Davao—the show will be a free whole-day affair, complete with autograph signing sessions and photo ops with the ABS-CBN stars. US-based Filipino artists Lea Salonga and Jasmine Trias will also appear in the ASAP presentation, while the legally embattled Superstar Nora Aunor will grace the set of The Buzz later on in the day.
But to proclaim ABS-CBN the “winner by default,†come July 16, would be a sheer misnomer, according to Jeffrey H. Remigio, assistant vice president of ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel (TFC).
He explains: “Our trip to the United States is not at all a competition with GMA 7 on the same level as the network war we have here in the Philippines. It isn’t like the two networks being in Cebu last summer, either. We are bringing the stars to Los Angeles to thank our loyal subscribers for supporting TFC for close to a decade, while the other network is just launching their channel in the United States.â€
Put simply, TFC has the advantage of a 10-year head start, which has earned them viewership in 160,000 households in California alone. And Remigio is quick to translate that figure into “viewers’ trust in TFC.†He cites GMA 7’s previous but failed attempts in establishing a presence in the United States, which apparently, had disappointed the Filipino community there, just like the show cancellation in Los Angeles.
“I can honestly say TFC is not threatened by impending competition,†Remigio continues. “We’ve always known competition is inevitable, but it doesn’t change the fact that we have already built a relationship with Filipinos around the world. They know they can rely on us to make them feel a little closer to home, be they in North America, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Cambodia, American Samoa, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, and even Europe and Australia.â€
And part of TFC’s service is continuously bringing the ABS-CBN stars to meet subscribers around the world. The “US Kapamilya Caravan†is just part of the network’s year long plan, which had already taken the likes of Randy Santiago, Rachelle Alejandro and Geneva Cruz among others to different parts of Asia, US and Europe.
“We’ve been doing shows like this for a long time because it is a way for us to show TFC subscribers that they’re important to us,†he adds.
GMA 7, however, could argue that even with TFC’s head start, 160,000 households in California is just a drop in the bucket, considering the 2.5 million total of Filipinos residing in the United States. There certainly is plenty of room for PinoyTV to spread its wings.
But while Remigio acknowledges that fact, he goes on to relate TFC’s other achievements, including ongoing shows produced in the US for the US audience, and a forthcoming soap-opera project specifically for international viewers, as if to show that PinoyTV has a great deal of catching up to do.
Nevertheless, a network war on a global level can still ensue if GMA 7 wisely pours its resources into PinoyTV and works double time to challenge TFC. And while they will miss their chance at courting Los Angeles on July 16, they are set to conquer San Francisco on July 23 with the SOP PinoyTV Launch at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. But of course, TFC will be just around the corner guarding their territory as the “Kapamilya Caravan†moves to the Monster Park Fairgrounds on the same day.
Let the battle begin!

So sa mga KAPUSOD stop claiming na ang Ch2 ang nangagaya.
And besides their claiming to be 55 years, why is it that the network of ABS-CBN is far interms of Business gain or the enfluence like theitwo anchor Loren legarda and Noli De Castro. Who can tell if those two anchor will win if they do work at GMA, dba ang Kapuso nla na si Jay Sonza nang Mel and Jay didnt won the last senatorial election and also their famous most goodlooking Anchor in 24 oras Mike Enriquez i think did run for senatorial election but backed out.
Nakakaawa naman na di cla natulungan ng kanilang staition na manalo. Will in fact their claiming to be the most watched tv network. ibig sabihin ba nyan na d credible maging senator ang kanilang mga KAPUSO.
and look at what they have done to Jay Sonza, he was kick oput from Mel and Jay which in known now as Mel and Joey which was aired before in ch2. But pinalitan si Jay.

ABS CBN would just like to ask an for an apology to the people for our biggest failure in promoting and giving out shows with good quality and sense of everything. We have failed, and we admit it. We losed, and its true. And because of this, the advertisers now are starting to move toward the other network, leaving us bankrupt and empty. Our poposed solution to this is to sell the company to the country’s leading and gaining network GMA 7. This is to save and uplift the falling crisis of ABS CBN and so, avoid further damages to it. i can’t say na kapamilya me pero hindi rin naman ako kapuso. i just hate it kapag nagyayabang na ang gma7. lalo na ang eat bulaga at SOP. i hate regine velasquez, her voice is nice but her attitude is so plastic. there is this episode sa SOP nung nandoon pa ang kapatid nya. may tsismis na lilipat daw si regine sa ABS. and then biglang nag butt in si kakai, she said kahit kailan daw hindi sya lilipat doon. haler as if naman ganun kahalaga si regine para mapataas ang ratings ng ABS. ang ilong nga nya hindi nya mapataas, ang ratings pa kaya. basta i hate her. ingliserang tryng hard. kahit ang mga starstruck na yan lumalaki ulo. sa pair nila mark at jennylyn…….YAK! may araw din ang GMA. magpakasaya na kayo! dahil KAPAMILYA na ulit ang maghahari……..

Hello mga kapamilya. the recent survey they posted wasnt true alt all, refering to the one posted obove by someone named AGB nielsen. If thats the results given by agb nielsen really, woukd show that ABS CBN really is leading as it is expected for two decades now. I think the one posted above was corrupted through the survey of AC NIELSEN, which i do strongly believed got a deficiency in their formula, specifically with the weights they have given to metro manila, davao, cebu and othey key cities.
i dont argue with how ABS CBN LEADS THE TV INDUSTRY IN PHILIPPINES, what i argue is the formula that AC NIELSEN had used in their surveys. hope the AC NIELSEN company would do good as will with AGB GROUP.
What i know is that GMA7 is saying vocally that AC NIELSEN AND AGB GROUP HAD already merge, so why is it that the two company had produced differnet rating survey and formulas. Isnt it ironic that GMA 7 will claim that the AC NIELSEN rating is far true than AGB NIELSEN, taking into account the claim of GMA7 commisioned survey firm AC nielsen had already merge with AGB Group.

Anyway…
According to someone i personally know who had worked both in GMA and ABS, the system goes like this. In ABS, you’re paid higher but your employment is not as protected as it is in GMA where you earn much less. So in ABS, they can kick you out of the company whenever.
As of the bragging attitude of GMA, it’s just but normal. The channel have been a second placer until just recently so isn’t it something to celebrate? During the peak season of Meteor Garden, ABS was doing the same. For many years, they have been doing the same amount of bragging–and probably even worse! ‘Di lang natin xa naalala since sa sobrang tagal na #1 ang ABS-CBN, the frequency of them actually saying na nangunguna sila ay hindi na halata… and of course, they never thought GMA’s day would come.
Whether GMA’s supremacy would be a short or an epic-like one, spare them the right to savor the moment.

I just hate it when people use their popularity to promise things they won’t be able to keep. Tignan mo na lang ‘yang si Noli, a very good broadcaster who ironically was too quiet as a senator (and who didn’t even comment on the PPA issue/ QUIZ: what’s the connection between these words? ABS-CBNLOPEZMERALCO(PPA)?). ‘Yang si Loren, whom I once looked up to, turned out to be a desperate mud-thrower.
If I were a Kapamilya, I wouldn’t even brag that these people came from ABS-CBN. Nakakahiya.

at saan no.1 ang ABS-CBN? sa mga probinsiyang sinurvey nila na alam nilang dominated nila? nagpapatawa ba kayo? kung no.1 lang sa MegaManila ang GMA7, ang ABS-CBN ay no.1 sa ’selected cities’ na na survey ng surveyor nila. for all i know baka tampered pa nga ang resulta ng mga survey na yan.

ABS-CBN is extremely happy with the warm reception accorded by the public to the network’s well-attended summer caravans in Northern Luzon and Cebu. The station’s advance infrastructure and balanced programming have ensured the TV viewing in public’s continued support outside Metro Manila.
Take the major urban centers in the Philippines, with 2005 first quarter ratings from Nielsen Media Research (NMR). In Cebu, NMR records ABS-CBN’s commanding 18.1 percent rating over its competitor’s 8.7 percent.
Davao is even more overwhelmingly ABS-CBN country, with a stunning 21.7 percent over its competitor’s 6.7 percent.
And it’s the same story nationwide, as well. With ratings from the Philippine Survey Research Group (PSRC), ABS-CBN’s Bacolod shows an incredible 94 percent audience share and 36.8 percent rating as against the competitors’s 5 percent audience share and 1.8 percent rating.
Ninety percent of General Santos City and Naga City are kapamilya viewers as well. And ratings for Legaspi City (32.1 percent rating, 86 percent audience share versus the competitor’s 4.9 percent rating and 13 percent audience share), Zamboanga City (34.9 percent rating and 72 percent audience share versus competitor’s 12.4 percent rating and 26 percent audience share) and Cagayan de Oro City (17 percent rating and 57 percent audience share against the rival’s 11.3 percent rating and 38 percent audience share) also establish once and for all that ABS-CBN is still the Philippine’s leading network.
The latest surveys in different key cities show that while ABS-CBN is closely catching up with its rival in Mega Manila, it continues to lead in audience share and ratings in the rest of the country. On a nationwide level, a significant 73 percent of TV homes are outside Mega Manila.
ABS-CBN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Eugenio Lopez III, during the corporation’s recent stockholder’s meeting, thanked the station’s supporters all over the country to whom he attributes the network’s continued leadership in nearly all areas outside Metro Manila.
He assures, “We will continue to maintain a dynamic program mix that will not only entertain and inform but also serve the Filipino audience.â€

Its not abs-cbn fault to charge our meralco and maynilads customers, blame it to Glorya, it she stops corruption then we can regulate our price, those company are just compensating you. Kung may pagkukunan ka nang tubig mo at kuryente, you have all your choice to leave meralco AND maynilad isnt it.
Stop blaming lopezes for oour governments failure to deliver basic services to the people. Anda again, those company im sure are not gaining , most of their revenues go back to taxes, and fees from franchise of gvernment

Ok, I converted it to half the size – loseless MPEG4 compression, now I will try to compress the Audio as well. I really need to compress videos since I am saving what is left of my 20 gig of my HD (about 1 gig left – and I only got about 30 mp3s). Thanks retz for the idea. I will also convert my E3 coverage of Metal Gear Solid 4 to save space :)
