ASUS recently unveiled the ROG Phone 2, a beast of a gaming smartphone. It’s the successor to the ROG Phone that ASUS launched last year. While it has several interesting aspects, we’ve picked out some of its best-selling features. Read on!
Table of Contents
The ROG Phone 2 comes with a humongous 6.59-inch display. Not only that, but it also has a 120Hz refresh rate with a 1ms response time. It is a gaming smartphone after all, and a higher refresh rate when it comes to gaming means smoother movements. A 120Hz refresh rate combined with an AMOLED display results into absolute eye candy for the users. With such an impressive screen, it’s no wonder ASUS also equipped it with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection.
One of the main highlights of the ROG Phone 2 is its Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor. Combined with the phone’s 12GB RAM and with a clock speed faster than that of the standard SD855, the SD855 Plus can handle multitasking, video streaming, social media browsing, and apps that are hog resources. More than that, the SD855 Plus is capable of running games that have graphics on the heavier side.
There isn’t a need to fit the device with expandable storage as it already comes with a hefty 512GB storage. Not only can users store a variety of games, but there’s also ample storage for apps, videos, photos, music, documents, movies, and more. The smartphone also utilizes UFS 3.0 storage, meaning that games install and load quickly due to its fast read and write speeds.
Gaming eats up a smartphone’s battery life, and so, with that in mind, ASUS gave this device an enormous battery capacity of 6000mAh. Having a massive battery also means that the ROG Phone 2 is quite heavy and thick, unlike the previous ROG Phone. There’s also a reverse charging feature, allowing the smartphone to become a power bank should your other devices run out of juice.
Rarely does one hear of a smartphone having more than one USB port to it but well, the ROG Phone 2 has three USB-C ports are equipped in this device. That’s right, three. There’s one at the bottom next to the primary microphone and the 3.5mm audio port, while two are on the left side of the device. One of the Type C ports on the left supports USB 3.1 Gen 2, Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, Quick Charge 4.0, and USB PD 3.0 on it as well. On the other hand, the Type C port next to it is a proprietary connector that can hook up accessories such as TwinView Dock II, Mobile Desktop Dock, and the ROG AeroActive Cooler II. The bottom port supports USB 2.0, Quick Charge 3.0, and USB PD 3.0.
Accessories such as the ROG Kunai Gamepad and TwinView Dock II allow the ROG Phone 2 to turn into a Nintendo Switch-like console with an extra screen. Extended gaming can raise the temperature of a smartphone, and the ROG Phone 2 isn’t an exception to that. While the smartphone has a GameCool II heatsink system, ASUS also has an accessory called the AeroActive Cooler II. It’s a clip-on fan to provide active cooling for the device. It can be hooked on to the proprietary connector, directing the airflow then towards the hottest part of the phone’s rear.
ASUS ROG produces devices, laptops, and peripherals that have RGB lighting and of course, the ROG Phone 2 comes with it as well. On the rear of the smartphone sits the ROG logo that has RGB LED lights on it, giving the device a pretty cool effect.
Those are the stand-out features of the device! Want to know more about the ROG Phone 2? Check out our hands-on article here and watch our initial impressions video below!
