How to protect your BPI account from cybercriminals
It’s already known that banks implement sophisticated security measures to make sure that accounts are guarded against attacks. As customers, we also share the responsibility of making sure that our accounts are safe. So, how do you protect your BPI account from cybercriminals? Here are some tips.
Always check the website URL
When visiting the BPI website, always make sure that the URL is correct before you log in to your account. In this case, it’s https://online.bpi.com.ph/. Also, avoid clicking on email links to access your account, so you can be sure that you’re visiting the authentic BPI website. As an added security measure, check that the padlock icon and “https” appear in the address bar. Clicking on the padlock will show the site’s certificate.
Avoid unsecured WiFi connections
Avoid using unsecured networks like public WiFis to access your bank accounts, as criminals can intercept web traffic and steal your account or credit card numbers, as well as other sensitive information.
Always log out of your account
Don’t forget to log out of your BPI Online Banking account once you’re done with your transactions to make sure that no one else can view your account after use. It is also advisable to clear your browser after logging out to prevent stored information from being retrieved by unwanted parties.
Avoid using shared computers
Avoid using shared computers like those found in internet cafes. It’s risky as you can’t be sure how well those computers are maintained. There is also the possibility that a malware or virus has been installed to steal your login credentials.
Regularly change your passwords
It’s highly recommended that you regularly change your passwords, not just of your banking accounts, but of your primary email account as well. You can do this every few months to minimize the risk of unauthorized access in case your old password is leaked or compromised. Choose strong passwords of at least six characters and use alphanumeric and special characters.
Never share your OTP and other confidential information with anyone
A One-Time PIN (OTP) is required for financial transactions done in the BPI Online and Mobile app to ensure that you did the transaction. Do not share it with anyone.
Likewise, never share your confidential information such as username, passwords, birthday, and mobile number with anyone, even to your family and friends. Access to this information may grant access to your bank account.
Turn on your Login Email Notifications
BPI has a feature that sends you email notifications for transactions done via online and mobile banking. It is a handy feature that helps you monitor the activities on your accounts. To activate, login to BPI Online, go to Account Maintenance, then switch on “Login Email Notifications.”
Activate ATM Withdrawal Alerts
Similar to email notifications, you can receive an alert for every successful ATM withdrawal. Just log in to BPI Online, go to Account Maintenance, and enable “Withdrawal Alerts.” You can also set the minimum amount and how you want to receive the alerts – via email, SMS, or both.
Take advantage of the Card Control features
If you have a BPI Debit Mastercard, you should use the Card Control features. You can set withdrawal or purchase limits, enable or disable international withdrawals, temporarily block or unblock your card, or tag your card as “lost.” To know more about it, you can read our article here.
Report suspicious websites and emails
Let’s do our part. If you receive an email requesting personal information through embedded links or third-party sites, or encounter a phishing website posing as a BPI website (i.e., has a bogus request for information such as your credit card details), report it to [email protected]
