BlackBerry will release two mid-range Android smartphones

After coming out with PRIV which is a flagship phone running on Android OS, BlackBerry is planning to go for the mid-range market with two of their upcoming smartphones this year.

The company’s CEO, John Chen, announced in an interview that two new handsets are in the pipeline — one to have a physical keyboard while the other a full touchscreen. The move to go for the mid-range market came from realizing that what they did with the PRIV might not be the best idea.

“The fact that we came out with a high-end phone [as our first Android device] was probably not as wise as it should have been,” said Chen. He also mentioned that it was “too high-end of a product”.

With that announcement, expect two new handsets (initially codenamed the Rome and the Hamburg) from BlackBerry coming out this year with their hardware and security working side-by-side Android’s platform.
