Meralco expands EV roll-out to ramp up Green Mobility Program

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) started deploying 69 electric vehicles (EVs) to heighten efforts to create sustainable modes of transportation under the Green Mobility Program. This new batch of EVs comprises cars, vans, pick-up trucks, and motorcycles to cater to the transportation needs of their Business Centers and Sector Offices which adds to the 60 EVs already being used by the Meralco field personnel. This also goes towards Meralco’s efforts to electrify their full vehicle fleet, with their Metro Manila service vehicles now all running electric.

Meralco President and CEO Atty. Ray C. Espinosa announced the Green Mobility Program, extending to all Meralco subsidiaries, making it a One Meralco initiative.

The Green Mobility Program is part of Meralco’s sustainability agenda that is rooted in and supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Other priorities include the company’s just, orderly, and affordable transition to clean energy through 2030 and onwards; the shift to plant-based ester oil for distribution transformers; and One For Trees Program, wherein Meralco plants five million trees by 2025.

“Through this Program, we express our full support to the Philippines’ transition to electric transportation. As we look forward to the government’s enactment of the EV Bill—which will provide incentives to both EV suppliers and users—we welcome a greener, cleaner, and safer environment in our streets and thoroughfares,” Espinosa said.

“Beyond delivering accessible and reliable electricity service to households and businesses, we, in Meralco, are also at the forefront of providing sustainable solutions to our customers. With our important and intensified shift to vehicle electrification, we hope to influence and inspire others to follow suit and to likewise embed sustainability in their operations,” said Meralco Chief Sustainability Officer and eSakay President and CEO Raymond B. Ravelo.

“All these important initiatives are a testament to One Meralco’s pledge to protect and preserve our planet—and ultimately, to power good lives not only for ourselves today, but also for our children’s tomorrow,” Espinosa concluded.

Hopefully this’ll show others the benefits and advantages of having EVs in their fleet. If ever more follow suit, it will definitely help in protecting our environment.

I love the statement Meralco is making. An electric distributor showing the way for clean energy. Hope this is instrumental in making EVs mainstream.

I just read an article of Meralco’s solar energy unit Spectrum’s efforts to install more solar energy units. Now they also have an EV fleet. Great to see the biggest electrical distributor promoting clean energy.
