Ookla has released their updated Speedtest Global Index for May 2021, showing the Philippines’ average mobile internet download speed at 31.98Mbps, while the average fixed broadband download speed is at 58.73 Mbps.
For Mobile, the Philippines now ranks 77th with an average download speed of 31.98 Mbps, an average upload of 8.74 Mbps, and a latency of 30ms. That’s a significant improvement from the April ranking of 84th with an average download of 29.12 Mbps, upload of 7.65 Mbps, and latency of 33ms.
For Fixed Broadband, the country is up at 65th with an average download of 58.73 Mbps, upload of 57.40 Mbps, and latency of 21ms. It’s a jump from April’s 80th ranking with 49.31 Mbps download, 47.83 Mbps upload, and 22ms latency.
Even with the improvements, the Philippines has still a long way to go compared to other countries. Leading the ranking for May 2021 in Mobile is UAE with an average of 194.04 Mbps. Leading fixed broadband, on the other hand, is Singapore with 250.35 Mbps.
A person who has poor internet is likely to scoff at these figures. Same person will also claim that such and such telco is the worst in the world. Conversely, satisfied customers won’t bother top advertise their satisfaction. But these Ookla figures include both complaints and approval. I only hope that the improvement reaches all soon.
I agree that there’s still a long way to go but we should also recognize the strides of improvement we’ve been having for the last months. Hopefully, the speeding up of permit processing aid in this progress.
Between statements based on personal experience and reviews from independent firms like Ookla, I’m more inclined to believe the firms which are backed by numbers. I believe there is still a long way to go but these little improvements are a start.
