Today, Smart and Huawei have successfully made the first Voice over Wifi (VoWifi) call over the Smart network.
VoWiFi allow users to make calls while connected to Wifi using the native dialer of their VoWiFi-supported smartphones without having to install any third party apps.
“With this breakthrough, we are leading the way to making more communication options available to our customers. We look forward to letting our customers make Wifi calls on PLDT Home and Smart Wifi soon,” said PLDT and Smart Senior Vice President for Network Planning and Engineering Mario G. Tamayo. “This pioneering initiative is a key part of PLDT and Smart’s efforts to continuously improve and evolve our voice services”.
Tamayo also said that this is part of PLDT and Smart’s strategy to use both of their fixed and wireless networks to provide more converged products and deliver better service to their customers.
Smart Core Planning and Engineering Center Head John Emil Buencamino said that WiFi calling will “greatly enhance and complement” Smart’s current rollout, which includes Smart Wifi in high-traffic public places. He also added that WiFi calling can help make their customers’ voice calls even better and that Smart Network is ready for this advancement.

So, it will only be available at PLDT and Smart wifi only. Hindi pwede ang wifi ng iba, say globe wifi tatawag sa smart number. hehehehe….
If these two telcos can work together and have this VoWiFi available to all networks, that is what I will call a breakthrough. Breaking the barriers and back breaking innovation.
Huwag lang breaking bank accounts.
Globe had this back in December. For Free.
