Dell Precision 15 5520 Hands-on, First Impressions

Dell has just officially introduced to the Philippine market its refreshed lineup of the Precision mobile workstations and one of them is the Precision 15 5520. It promises power and looks since it carries a choice of Intel Core or Xeon processors and boasts a sleek design headlined by its InfinityEdge display. Here’s our hands-on and first impressions.

The Precision 15 5520 is equipped with a 15.6-inch panel bordered by the noticeably slim bezels under its aluminum shell. There are two available display configurations with one having Full HD resolution without touch function and the other having a crisp Ultra HD screen with touchscreen capabilities.

The company’s InfinityEdge technology indeed makes for a more appealing experience when you use the 5520 — not to mention the fact that the thinned-out bezels give more screen real estate while avoiding a sizeable footprint.

It also features a PremierColor panel that should improve color fidelity.

Looking at its main body, it seems like the keyboard is squeezed at the center with a noticeable blank area surrounding it. Because of this, the keys seemed too cramped together which may present a learning curve for some users.

On the other hand, they are back-lit to aid while working at night and the touchpad has a decent size enough for easy navigation.

The company wanted the 5520 to have that premium presence when you use it in public so they layered the palm rest with carbon fiber. It did look like a high-end perk and did feel nice to the touch as well.

This implementation could also avoid the unwanted scratches easily committed on glossy materials.

The power button is situated at the upper right corner with a small embossed marker to easily know where to press even without looking.

The 5520 has dual USB 3.0 ports which are found on both sides of the compact laptop. Also seen here are the memory card reader, the battery status light indicator and button, and the Kensington security slot.

Meanwhile, on the other side, we have the power adaptor port, the other USB 3.0, HDMI and Thunderbolt 3 ports, and headphone jack.

When closed, the Precision 15 5520 clocks in 11.48mm thin and weighs a little less thank 2kg. This combination makes it the world’s thinnest, lightest, and smallest 15-inch mobile workstation.

This laptop can be flexible and carry either Intel Core and Intel Xeon processors partnered to a NVIDIA Quadro GPU.

It can also be equipped with up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 2TB of SSD storage.

With those sleek physical features and capable internals, don’t expect that it would come cheap. Pricing for the Dell Precision 15 5520 starts at Php115,000 and is available through authorized resellers.
