Toshiba Adds NFC to its New SDHC Cards

In 2011, Toshiba unveiled one of the first WiFi-enabled SD cards in the market. Fast forward to today and the Japanese firm continues to innovate their tiny storage solution by adding Near Field Communication (NFC) to its feature set.

With their new NFC-enabled SD card and accompanying free app called Memory Card Preview, users can easily preview the images (up to 16 thumbnails) on the card, as well as check the available space on the card just by tapping the camera to their NFC-toting smartphone.

Unfortunately, apart from that, you can’t do anything else with Toshiba’s fancy NFC SD card which is quite a bummer. You can’t transfer photos from the SD card to your NFC enabled smartphone, unlike with the FlashAir.

Speaking of which, Toshiba also announced a new version of their WiFi-enabled SD card called the Toshiba FlashAir III. The most note-worthy improvement that the company did on this model is the addition of a nifty tweak which allows users to simultaneously access the SD card’s contents on their smartphone and connect to the internet at the same time.

Toshiba’s NFC-enabled SDHC card will be available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities and will go on sale starting this March. The pricing details of this SD card were not mentioned during the announcement.

The Toshiba FlashAir III, on the other hand, will be offered in two storage capacities (16GB and 32GB) and are priced at USD79.99 and USD99.99 respectively.
