Amazing Graphics and Performance with NVIDIA DLDSR

If you’re someone who plays competitive games online then you know that image quality is second to the amount of performance you get in game. You end up sacrificing a pretty image as long as you can get more FPS in game to give you that competitive advantage. But what if there was a way to give you the same amount of FPS you need for competitive gaming while still giving you that graphical fidelity that you crave for?

NVIDIA‘s new Game Ready Driver might just be your solution to getting better graphical fidelity and high framerates. Enter DLDSR or Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution. This allows you to use spare GPU cycles to improve image quality in games. This means that games that do not tax the GPU too much, like older games such as Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, or games that don’t require too much GPU power like Valorant, can use their space GPU cycles to boost the image quality of their games. This method improves image quality by enhancing detail, smoothing edges, and reducing shimmering.

How does it work though? DLDSR renders a game at a higher, more detailed resolution before using AI to intelligently scale that back down to the resolution of your monitor. It’s basically the opposite of DLSS. DLSS renders at a lower resolution then scales it up to gain performance while maintaining image quality, while DLDSR goes from high to low to gain image quality. This is basically very beneficial for players who like to try older games which do not tax their GPUs too much.

I’m one who likes to play competitive games such as battle royale, and shooter games such as Fortnite, Overwatch, and Valorant. I play these games usually at my native resolution of 1920 x 1080. I mix and match settings to get the best possible image I could while not sacrificing FPS or frames per second, because in competitive gaming that is very important. Using DLDSR 2.5x though, I don’t need to make this sacrifice, the picture quality I get is much better and smoother in these games while having the same FPS.

Playing Valorant, I usually get around 320-350FPS on my 3060Ti with a Ryzen 5 5600x at 1080P. Using the DLDSR 2.5x I get the same FPS that I used to get but with greater graphical fidelity. This is great as I get a much smoother looking and better graphical experience in this game. The same goes for Overwatch, I get the graphical quality of 1440P gameplay but at a lower resolution of 1080P. I get the same FPS but awesome graphical fidelity. Fortnite is the same story as well, at 1440P for example, I get around 95FPS, but at 1080P with DLDSR 2.5x I get the same graphical quality but with 167 FPS. This is great for someone who takes competitive gaming seriously.

Even older games such as The Witcher 3, or Prey, can benefit from DLDSR. I always loved how the Witcher 3 looked as a game, and with DLDSR, I can get a better picture in front of me while still maintaining the FPS I need to enjoy the game. In Prey it’s the same story, I get better picture quality, equal to DSR 4X, but this gives me more performance. From 108FPS with DSR 4x, i Get 143FPS with DLDSR 2.5x.

How do you enable DLDSR though?

  • To enable DLDSR: Launch NVIDIA Control Panel
  • Navigate to “Manage 3D Settings”
  • Scroll down to “DSR Factors”
  • Select either or both of the DL-based DSR factors (1.78x, 2.25x)
  • Click “OK” and then “apply”
  • New DLDSR resolutions will now be added to the system and available to select within the NVIDIA Control Panel, Windows Display settings, and in-game resolution settings

DLDSR and DSR factors are based on the maximum resolution of your display.

NVIDIA also offers new advanced Freestyle filters, SSRTGI, SSAO, and Dynamic DOF. These are accessible by pressing Alt-F3 during gameplay on GeForce Experience’s in-game overlay is enabled.
