Australian-based telecommunications company, Telstra Corporation Limited, recently confirmed that they are currently in joint-venture talks with San Miguel Corporation (SMC) for a possible investment on the conglomerate’s wireless business.
SMC’s President and Chief Operation Officer, Ramon Ang, also confirmed the on-going negotiation with Australia’s largest telecommunication company through a text message to Reuters.
Although representatives from both parties did confirm the negotiation, neither provided further details about it. However, sources claim that the discussions between the two giants have being going on for several months already prior to the recent confirmation, and it may not be long before the two companies will finally come to an agreement.
A win-win deal for both companies
In an interview conducted by Sydney Morning Herald with Sachin Gupta, Regional Head of Telecommunications Research at Nomura, Gupta said that both companies will benefit from this joint venture. “Telstra does lack emerging-market experience”, but has a wealth of experience in the telecommunications segment. San Miguel, on the other hand, “is an influential conglomerate with ample spectrum holdings, which is good, but it has a weak track record on previous telco attempts”.
Better Network Infrastructure
If this deal come to a fruition, majority of the investment that SMC will receive from Telstra will likely be used to improve its network infrastructure in the country. At least that’s ideally what they should do if they want to go up against the two dominating force in the local scene.
At the time of writing, both SMC and Telstra stated that they have not reached an agreement regarding the matter and “there is no certainty that this will occur.”

Hmm Telstra ? Philippines will experience nothing but worst . I’ve worked with Telstra and I know how they play with their internet capping.. Pretty similar with witribe or could be worse. If our government will instead work hand in hand with Korean and Japanese ‘ telcos then it’s a game changer .

We need someone like Telstra to enter our very saturated telco market, however, Telstra is known for their low cap high cost services as well. For example, a 15gb 4G plan would cost you AUD105 a month which is roughly equivalent to around PHP3,500. If San Miguel has any control over data cost and pricing then they should consider Telstra’s current model if its applicable to the Philippines. Right now I highly doubt their pricing model will work.

nagsa-start na sila gumawa ng network. San Miguel wants to launch by early 2016 or late 2015 with at least some coverage in major Philppine cities. ang problema kasi nila ay napakaraming isla ng Pilipinas, not only do you have to build towers you also have to lay fiber optic cables or microwave towers to connect the islands.

The head nurse in a hospital where I maintain the hospital software system said his husband who used to build cell towers (structure only) for SUN have started building towers for San Miguel somewhere down South (i think she mentioned Davao Oriental or Compostela or something).
wi-tribe ang nagpauso ng Cap sa pilipinas and on top of that they initially lied about the existence of the cap. And in the end they also gave poor service. Kaya nga lugi sila
San miguel and telstra have a lot of bad blood and bad reputation to fix.
I wish them luck since the more competition there is the better. But naman, learn from the mistakes of the past. Pinagpipilitan na “international” standard daw ang cap, e hindi pa naman uso ang cap noon. Its not true competition when you offer a product which is arguably inferior to the ones already in the market
