Yahoo has finally decided to shut down its long-time free-hosting service, Geocities. It was 10 years ago that Yahoo acquired Geocities for a huge sum of $3.57 billion.
There will be no more sign-ups starting today and towards the end of this year, all existing accounts will be shut down as well. Active users are advised to download and save their data from their accounts.
Yahoo is offering its professional web hosting services to those who still want to continue and move their sites (its the paid service though). For others, they will still be free hosting service to move to like Blogger or WordPress. I guess Yahoo is just saving up some money in this tough times and it looks like Geocities could be burning some serious cash.
I think I had my very first website back in the 90s on Geocities (or was it Angelfire?). In the days before blogging was known to man, having a Geocities account was the “in thing” then.
i used geocities too. it’s a pity that yahoo didn’t properly manage geocities it had potential.
the images in my blog are hosted by Geocities :D time to backup them! WAH! :-0
we will miss you geo. my first hosting website… /sob

aww i remember my first geocities website back in 1995.. it was a tribute to my favorite rap group Wu-Tang Clan.. hahaha wow how times have changed
hindi ako nagkalakas ng loob mag open ng site sa geocities before. i hope this wont happen to blogger and wordpress.
I created a site also at geocities before I actually started blogging. The site is still up, though I’ll be sad about this development. You can still access the site I had at geocities.com/jotuvillo
I guess this is expected since the US Companies are on the losing side. Most of the corporations are in debt.
Maybe Yahoo is cost-cutting and shutting this down is the best option to save more this 2009.
what?! Geocities shutting down?! They’ve shut down Yahoo! Briefcase first, now this? well, yeah! I really feel nostalgic about it. This is where my first website was hosted. Now, i’m using Google Pages. And Blogger too! They’re easier to use.. And I like that they’re using AJAX technology. :)
I’ve used that on my very first html project in Highschool.

Ah nostalgia! I hope users of the sites I’ve bookmarked have heard of this and would backup their sites, some of the best references for local history are hosted on Geocities.
its sad to say that there would be a lot of newbies in website building that would be affected. my first website is also hosted on geocities.
aww, i used to have a site on geocities because of the large space they gave you (50MB was it?) but then i used angelfire as my url because it was shorter
