World Map of Social Sites

Ever wondered which countries or regions which social networking sites are popular? We know Friendster is still #1 in the Philippines; but what about the others?

A world map social networking sites is shown here by French news site Le Monde. The labels are in French though…

… but we can clearly see that Friendster is the reigning king of social networking in most of Asia-Pacific (esp. SEA). Cyworld came in next because it’s huge (as in #1) in South Korea. LiveJournal on the other hand is biggest in Russia (539,550 accounts to date).

In Europe, Bebo came out on top. In Northern America, it’s MySpace followed by Facebook. In Latin America, Orkut is tops the chart. Over in Africa, Facebook again leads the pack, primarily because of South Africa.

That’s not taking into account the popular Social Networking Clones by countries I mentioned previously. Another related read is an old interview by PBS Mediashift on the diversity of social networking sites in various territories and countries worldwide.

What about a webmail world map? Or perhaps a browser world map? It would be a cool way to celebrate Firefox’s 50 M downloads. :D
