Globe vs Smart: Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8+ Plans

Both Globe and Smart have just announced their postpaid offerings for Samsung’s latest flagships — the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+.

The new Samsung handsets don’t come cheap when getting it unlocked. If you want to stretch out the payment terms to get the new top-of-the-line phone, getting a postpaid plan will help. But, should you get it under Globe or Smart? Here’s our comparison to help you out.

Here’s a comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S8:

With Globe, we have their suggested offering of Plan 1799 with a cash-out of Php19,200. As before, they offer the cash-out as an installment via select credit cards to put down the cost to Php800/month. The plan comes with unlimited calls to Globe/TM, unlimited texts to all networks, 11GB of mobile data, and months of premium subscriptions for Netflix, HOOQ, and Spotify. All in all, the plan will cost you Php2,599/month for a 24-month contract which has a total cost of Php62,376.

Smart, on the other hand, has a similar offering under their Plan 999 which includes 50 minutes of calls to all networks, unlimited texts to all networks, 10GB of mobile data, and a free monthly app of your choice. While the plan itself is cheaper compared to Globe’s, the cash-out is a bit costly. For the Galaxy S8, Smart offers it with an initial handset payment of Php5,000 plus a monthly installment of Php1,500. As a result, you’ll have to shell out Php2,499/month with a total cost of Php64,976 for the whole 24-month contract including the initial payment.

Let’s now check with the Samsung Galaxy S8+:

Samsung Galaxy S8GlobeSmart

If you want to get the bigger sibling, Globe suggests the Plan 1999 that also comes with unlimited calls to Globe/TM, unlimited texts to all networks, and months of premium subscriptions for Netflix, HOOQ, and Spotify, but it’s got a bigger 16GB mobile data allowance. The handset fee at this plan is Php21,600 or Php900/month for installment. The total monthly fee will be Php2,899 with a total cost of Php69,576 for 24 months.

Smart, again, has a different scheme. We chose the Plan 1499 with its 60 minutes of calls to all networks, unlimited texts to all networks, monthly free app, and a whopping 18GB of mobile data. Since the Galaxy S8+ is more expensive, the initial cash-out for the device is Php8,000 with a monthly fee of Php1,500. The total monthly fee is Php2,999 and for the whole 24-month contract, you’ll shell out Php79,976.

Seems like the handset payment scheme of Smart for Galaxy S8 and S8+ is taking a toll to the cost of the plan. We don’t see any 30-month contact option so far which usually makes the cash-out cheaper. As for Globe, you’d have to resort to the 24-monthly installment cash-out to keep the monthly cost more manageable.

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ is available in Midnight Black, Maple Gold, and Orchid Gray colors with local price tags of Php39,990 and Php45,990 when unlocked.

I have globe. I tried to insert my smart sim. the signal are ok and I can send and received text messages but the data is disabled. APN also can’t be edited.

    Is this normal?

    Smart
Plan 399 for Galaxy S8 only

    initial payment:
399(sim plan)+1500(device monthly fee)+3000(initial device fee) = 4899 initial payment upon approval. 1899 msf. no hidden charges. Galaxy S8+ initial is 7899 (plan 399), MSF is 1899. both on 24 lock up period. network unlocked.

    vs

    Globe
recommended plan (in case you want your initial payment is cheaper), plan 2499. MSF is also 2499.. but,. that’s if you are a credit card holder, and selected credit cards only.

all plans besides this will have an initial payment of 19k (or basically 5 digits initial payment haha), 24mos lock up period (same for S8+), network locked.

*I work at Globe Wireline Dept (Home Broadband), so at least I do know a little bout our postpaid plan.

aaand to that guy, yep, all our globe broadband LTE/DSL are already consumable since April of 2015. Unli plans are only available for business accounts now. FYI, if you applied thru 3rd party agents (field agents rather).. I advice you to just call our hotline, (02)7301000 or 211 mobile. most of the 3rd party agents aren’t waaaay accurate.. usually sila sakit namin sa ulo. why hotline? kasi kami nakakakita mismo ng policies, accurate informations, dahil nakaharap kami sa globe system realtime during every each calls.

So there is no more unli for globe even with the P1500 data charge cap? Is it true that it is only up to 50gb now? What happens when I reach the limit? What will the speed be like? Thanks.

ALL THIS MONEY FOR AN UGLY PHONE (IMHO) *smh

why not just buy it with your credit card, pay monthly dues, get a cheap postpaid plan. No way Jose for this!

    • Avatar for Papapau Papapau says:

Seems like you just described Smart S8 Plan 399. Ugly really? haha! Compared to what then? Minority report and Iron Man interface I suppose. Nothing comes close to this.

Gone are the days that we could actually get a discounted/FREE phone from our carriers. Tsk tsk
I’m better off having an off-contract unlimited LTE subscription.

    • Avatar for noneym noneym says:

How do you get that unlimited off contract LTE though? The only way to get unlimited LTE now is through Globe Platinum and the Php1500 Data cap for Globe postpaid (which I heard is no longer a real unlimited since it is capped at 50GB).

Really smart?! 44k for the unlocked s8+ handset compared to 45k unlocked? We are better off buying an unlocked phone! Geez! They are supposed to subsidize the cost of the phone when you subscribe to a plan, not like this! Not smart ar all!
