A major Cloudflare outage caused several global websites and apps including X (Twitter), ChatGPT, and even DownDetector to go offline on Tuesday morning. Many users saw an error message saying they needed to “unblock challenges.cloudflare.com” before the sites could load. Cloudflare posted an update saying that a fix had been rolled out and that services were returning to normal. Cloudflare is still investigating what triggered the sudden traffic spike. Cloudflare’s CTO Dane Knecht, clarified on X that the outage wasn’t caused by a cyberattack. Instead, a hidden bug in its bot-mitigation system began crashing after a routine configuration update which led to the widespread downtime.
