On Wednesday, the operator of the international trans-Pacific submarine cable system Asia-America Gateway (AAG), has informed PLDT that emergency maintenance activities will be conducted on AAG submarine cables in the waters of Hong Kong SAR from Saturday, 26 September 2020 9:00 AM to Wednesday, 30 September 2020 5:00 AM (Philippine Standard Time). PLDT has assured PLDT and Smart customers of continued internet connectivity all throughout the maintenance as they have identified alternative cable systems to keep its connectivity resilient. PLDT and Google’s Taara project have brought fiber-like internet to Barangay Subay in Talim Island, Rizal without laying a single underwater cable. The Taara system uses free-space optical communication to transmit data via light beams, offering a lower-cost and faster-to-deploy alternative to submarine cables in hard-to-reach areas.
