Dropbox announces Cold Storage system

Listen to article

Dropbox has announced a new storage system for files that are not frequently accessed by users — the Cold Storage.

After launching Magic Pocket three years ago, it serves and stores more than 90% of Dropbox’ users’ data already. Adopting SMR technology, the company has successfully implemented improving efficiency and lowering the cost with the Cold Storage. File access is now divided into two categories namely warm and cold, assigning each file based on how frequent they can be accessed.

The Cold tier runs on the same hardware and network but it saves costs by reducing the disk usage by 25% without compromising durability or availability. Dropbox said that the end-user experience is “almost indistinguishable between two tiers”.
