We heard news of it last year, but the tech giant is finally putting the final nail in the coffin. Google is ending its Assistant after many years of good service.
The official shutdown date is September 4, 2026. Google Assistant will be replaced by Gemini on Android, Android Auto, and WearOS. Gemini is seen as the more powerful AI tool that has been rapidly improving over the past few years – thus it makes sense that Google is going all in on it.
However, not all devices are making the shift. As AI requires a certain level of hardware, Google Assistant will continue operation on smartphones that don’t meet the minimum specifications (2GB of RAM, Android 10), Google Home devices, Google TV, smart displays, and other similar technologies. Cars with Android Automotive built-in (not just an Android Auto head unit) will also continue to operate on Google Assistant.
