HBO Max Gets “Aggressive” on Password Sharing-No More Free Riding

Listen to article

HBO Max is no longer playing it soft. During Warner Bros. Discovery’s Q2 earnings call, streaming chief JB Perrette signaled a shift from polite nudges to no-nonsense enforcement of its password-sharing rules. Starting September 2025, users sharing accounts outside their household will face firm prompts and even restrictions, unless they pay a fee of roughly US $7.99/month to add an authorized Extra Member.

This marks the end of optional compliance. Perrette called the current messaging “cancel‑able,” but warned it will soon require action. The crackdown is part of a phased rollout, expected to fully take effect by late 2025, with real financial gains aimed for 2026.

If you’ve been freeloading off someone else’s login, better start planning—or prepare for HBO Max to prompt you for payment at your next binge session.
