LEGO launches Smart Play system with Smart Brick and interactive playsets – first sets arrive March 2026

LEGO has officially unveiled the LEGO Smart Play system, marking one of the company’s biggest innovations in decades. Introduced at CES 2026, Smart Play is a new interactive platform that enhances traditional LEGO builds with responsive lights, sounds, and motion, while keeping the experience completely screen-free.

At the center of the system is the Smart Brick, a standard-sized LEGO brick equipped with built-in sensors, LEDs, a speaker, and wireless charging. Designed to blend seamlessly with existing LEGO elements, the Smart Brick reacts to movement, color, and nearby Smart Play components to bring builds to life without requiring apps, controllers, or external hubs.

How LEGO Smart Play works

The Smart Play ecosystem is made up of several interconnected elements:

• Smart Brick – Acts as the core interactive component, featuring motion and color sensors, sound output, LED lighting, and wireless charging.
• Smart Minifigures – Special minifigures embedded with identifiers that trigger unique effects and interactions when placed near a Smart Brick.
• Smart Tags – Small tiles that define how Smart Bricks behave in different play scenarios, enabling varied interactions within a single build.

These elements work together automatically, responding to how children move, place, and play with their LEGO creations.

First Smart Play sets arrive in 2026

LEGO confirmed that the first Smart Play sets will launch globally on March 1, 2026, starting with Star Wars-themed kits. These sets combine traditional brick-building with interactive effects such as engine sounds, lighting cues, and motion-based responses, designed to enhance storytelling and imaginative play.

Unlike previous LEGO tech initiatives, Smart Play focuses on physical interaction rather than screen-based experiences, reinforcing LEGO’s goal of keeping creativity and hands-on building at the core of play.
