Meralco clarifies pass-through charges amid criticism online

Listen to article

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has clarified that certain charges appearing on electricity bills are government-mandated subsidies and do not go to the company, following the spread of misleading claims on social media.

Meralco explained that these charges are collected and passed on to relevant agencies, in compliance with government regulations. These are not company-imposed fees, but mandated components included in electricity billing.

The subsidies covered under these charges include the Senior Citizens discount, Lifeline Rate for 4Ps beneficiaries, Feed-in Tariff Allowance, and Green Energy Auction Allowance.

According to the company, these mechanisms are designed to support vulnerable sectors and help fund the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

Meralco also emphasized that these charges are not unique to its operations. All distribution utilities and electric cooperatives in the Philippines are required to implement the same billing components.

The power distributor added that electricity bills are itemized to provide transparency, allowing customers to clearly see where their payments go.
