Netflix has quietly removed the ability to cast shows from your phone to most TVs, frustrating many users who relied on the feature. Now, mobile devices can no longer control playback, volume, or captions on TVs through the Netflix app. Instead, viewers must use the TV app and remote to watch content.
A Netflix spokesperson told WIRED that the feature was retired because not enough users were using it. Casting still works on some older devices, like pre-2020 Google Chromecast, but newer smart TVs and ad-supported plans are mostly affected.
The move has sparked criticism online, with users saying it removes convenience and complicates streaming. Netflix says the change isn’t aimed at stopping account sharing but is part of refocusing resources on features that benefit more subscribers. Users are advised to check if their TV supports Google Cast for an alternative way to cast content.
