#2016 uber data breach

After Uber recently came out about a data breach last year which saw 57 million users' data stolen, the National Privacy Commission announced in a press release yesterday that the personal information of Filipinos was among those exposed in the breach. The NPC states that parties responsible for concealment of a data breach may face serious civil and criminal liability, under the Data Privacy Act of 2012. The investigation is still ongoing, and aside from Uber themselves, the commission is cooperating with Australian and American data privacy authorities. A new data breach has reportedly exposed the personal information of 17.5 million Instagram users, raising fresh concerns about account security on Meta’s platforms. According to Malwarebytes, it found that the data breach occurred during its regular scan on the dark web, which it associated with a potential exposure of the Instagram API back in 2024. 16 billion passwords have been exposed in platforms like Apple, Google, Facebook, and more in a massive data breach. Lastly, the data from Cybernews’ reports are recent and not recycled from old breaches.
