The National Bureau of Investigation last Friday arrested 5 suspects behind the recent hacking of BDO online accounts. Dubbed the "Mark Nagoyo" group, the arrested individuals did not give any statement regarding the BDO hack when asked by authorities or the media. Back in November/December of 2021, around 700 BDO accounts were hacked and money were transferred to a UnionBank account under the name of Mark Nagoyo which prompted an investigation by the BSP and the NBI. A number of BDO customers are reporting on social media that their bank accounts were hacked, with cybercriminals making unauthorized transfers to UnionBank accounts. According to a report by Manila Bulletin, hackers siphoned money from BDO accounts and transferred it to a UnionBank account under a fake name, and used the funds to buy Bitcoin worth PHP 5 million from a cryptocurrency market on December 11. BDO has a daily limit of PHP 50,000, while UnionBank allows transfers of up to PHP 500,000 daily.
