OpenAI and PayPal have announced a major partnership that will integrate PayPal’s payment system directly into ChatGPT, enabling users to shop and check out instantly within conversations. The collaboration aims to usher in a new era of “agentic commerce,” where ChatGPT can help users discover, purchase, and track products from millions of PayPal merchants all without leaving the chat. Through the adoption of the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), ChatGPT users will soon be able to use PayPal for instant checkout, complete with the platform’s buyer protections, multiple payment options, and post-purchase services like tracking and dispute resolution. The partnership will also connect OpenAI to PayPal’s global merchant network, making tens of millions of businesses ranging from small sellers to top global brands, discoverable and shoppable through ChatGPT. “Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal said. Beyond payments, PayPal is expanding its use of OpenAI technology internally, rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise for its 24,000 employees, integrating Codex tools for engineers, and expanding use of OpenAI APIs to accelerate product development and improve customer experience.
