Indonesia will begin restricting access to social media platforms for users under the age of 16 starting March 28, according to an announcement from the country’s communication and digital affairs ministry. The policy will initially apply to major social media and digital platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Roblox, and Bigo Live. A spokesperson for Meta told The New York Times that the company has not yet received the official regulation and is waiting for further details. Indonesia’s move follows similar initiatives in other countries seeking to limit social media use among minors. A new social media platform called ZOOP is set to launch globally this April. A United Nations-backed report released on Thursday said heavy social media use is linked to lower wellbeing among young people in several countries, while Finland remains the happiest country in the world for the ninth year in a row. The report also showed that the effects of social media are mixed. Experts said the impact depends on how social media is used, the platform, and personal factors like gender and income.
