On October 26, 2012, Microsoft will start offering Windows 8 Pro upgrades to all PC users. This is only applicable to digital download versions of Windows 8 Pro. Despite Microsoft’s aggressive push to transition users onto Windows 11, a massive chunk of the user base is flatly refusing to give up Windows 10. To keep those legacy machines safe from potential threats, the tech giant introduced the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program last year, allowing personal account users to opt into continued patch coverage. Since Windows 10 was supposed to be retired at the end of 2025, the 1-year extension program was originally scheduled to reach its absolute end on October 12, 2026. Enrolled consumer devices will now officially continue to receive critical security patches until October 12, 2027. While we would've enjoyed if Microsoft called it the "Extended Extended Security Updates program," it seems like they fully intend for this extension to fly under the radar. Microsoft Windows is also banned with other foreign databases, with China favoring domestic solutions. Microsoft has finally closed the chapter on the Windows 10 and Windows 11 free upgrade option for Windows 7/8 users.
